The sound of cleats
The rhythmic sound of cleats clacking down the tunnels of such storied stadiums as the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, Rancho Cienega, the Rose Bowl, Anaheim Stadium and Home Depot Center before epic Loyola CIF playoff triumphs over the decades was at once deafening and eerily quiet as the Cubs marched silently toward the field where they would impose their indomitable will and make their mark on prep football history.
In single file, with steely determination the Big Blue bolted out of the tunnels and took to the field of battle to vanquish the best of foes, establish - and add to - their championship legacy and make yet another indelible imprint in the historic annals of California prep football.
There were the back-to-back CIF AAAA championship games at the Coliseum in 1962 and 1963. There were the CIF Division I title battles at Home Depot Center in 2003 and 2005. There was the epic bounce pass play in the CIF AAAA semifinals at El Camino College in 1975 that won the game and got Loyola to the championship contest, which it won, earning the Cubs the title of National Champions.
There was the CIF Division I championship game in 1990 at Anaheim Stadium, the second half of which was led off by a double pass touchdown by Loyola.
All of those contests were preceded by the long walk down the tunnel as the Big Blue prepared to add another epic win to their championship legacy.
