LOYOLA RUNNING BACK TAHJ OWENS NAMED TEAM MVP AT CUB FOOTBALL BANQUET
The 2021 Loyola varsity football team held its football awards banquet on January 13 on campus at Loyola. The Cubs earned a share of the Angelus League championship and advanced to the quarterfinal round of the CIF Southern Section Division 3 playoffs, finishing the season with an overall record of 8-4. The Big Blue was ranked the 15th best Medium School in the state by CalHi Sports.

ALL-STATE ACCOLADES
UCLA-bound offensive tackle SAM YOON was named to the CalHi Sports Medium Schools All-State first team.
Princeton-bound TAHJ OWENS was tabbed as an All-State Medium Schools all-purpose player as a RB/DB. Owens had over 2,000 all purpose yards and also saw action in the secondary.
Junior offensive tackle JACK SUSNJAR earned CalHi Sports’ third team All-State junior honors.
Sophomore inside linebacker TYE SMITH made the second team CalHi Sports
All-State sophomore honor squad.

BRAYDEN UTLEY ‘18 MAKES PLAYS FOR BAYLOR BEARS
Former Cub defensive lineman BRAYDEN UTLEY ‘18 started on the defensive line for Baylor which finished the 2021 season 12-2. Utley had a tipped pass, which led to an interception, and had an interception of his own in the Bears’ 21-16 victory over Oklahoma State in the Big 12 Conference championship game. Utley helped Baylor secure a victory over Ole Miss in the Sugar Bowl. Baylor was ranked fifth in the final college football polls.

MYLES BRYANT ‘16 HAS BIG YEAR FOR PATRIOTS

2015 Loyola MVP MYLES BRYANT had a highly successful season for the New England Patriots. The third-year NFL defensive back had an interception and game-sealing pass break up, among other key plays for the Pats.
DAVID LONG, JR. ‘16 HAD PICK SIX FOR L. A. RAMS
Former Cub All-American DB DAVID LONG, JR. ‘16 had a pick six for the Los Angeles Rams in their 34-11 wild card playoff victory over the Arizona Cardinals. Last season Long’s Loyola teammate MYLES BRYANT had a pick six for the Patriots. With Long’s pick six for the Rams, two former Cubs have interceptions for TDs in the NFL. In 2015, former Loyola MVP and four time All-Pro linebacker ANTHONY BARR ‘10 had a fumble recovery for a touchdown for the Minnesota Vikings. It is doubtful any high school can boast of such accomplishments by three of its former players. Long is hoping to help the Rams advance to the Super Bowl.

COLEMAN SHELTON ‘13 started two games this season at center for the Los Angeles Rams. He played well in both contests.
FORMER CUB STAR KODI WHITFIELD ‘12 JOINS COACHING STAFF AT SACRAMENTO STATE
After serving as a graduate assistant at UCLA under former Loyola QB JERRY NEUHEISEL ‘11, the Bruins’ wide receiver coach, KODI WHITFIELD ‘12 was hired by Sacramento State as its new wide receiver coach. WHITFIELD was an All-CIF safety for the Cubs in 2010, and later starred at Stanford.
CHRISTIAN RECTOR ‘15 EARNED STARTING ROLE IN CFL
Former Loyola defensive MVP CHRISTIAN RECTOR ‘15 started on the defensive line for the Canadian Football League’s Edmonton Elks during the 2021 campaign. He was an All-PAC-12 honoree at USC.
ADAM PILAPIL ‘14 JOINS COLORADO STATE COACHING STAFF
Former All-Serra League wide receiver ADAM PILAPIL, who was an All-Academic Mountain West Conference outside linebacker at Wyoming left his position as a defensive line coach at Montana State to serve in the same role at Colorado State.
