Cub Football - Special update, news on Alemany game cancellation

ALL BETS IN PLAY FOR LOYOLA FOOTBALL
On Saturday Mission League athletic directors met to decide how the cancellation of Loyola’s game against Alemany would be handled in the conference standings. The contest between the Cubs and Warriors scheduled for October 11 did not go forward because of fires in the north San Fernando Valley foothills.

Loyola’s Freshman retreat was on Saturday, October 12th. It was reported that Loyola’s President did not want the game to be played that Saturday because of the retreat, and of course the school did not want to play Monday because it would have significantly shortened the preparation and practice time before last Friday’s road game against Notre Dame.

The league administrators decided to count the cancelled game as a loss for both Loyola and Alemany, who both are now 1-2 in conference competition. The loss as a result of the cancelled game will not be counted in the teams’ overall records.

Below are the Mission League standings after last weekend’s games. Each team’s remaining conference games are listed following its record. The first record listed is each team’s overall record to date; the second record is each team’s conference record.

MISSION LEAGUE STANDINGS
Bishop Amat (7-1, 3-0) Notre Dame, Loyola
Notre Dame (6-2, 2-1) Bishop Amat, Alemany
Loyola (3-4, 1-2) Chaminade, Bishop Amat
Alemany (5-1, 1-2) Serra, Notre Dame
Chaminade (3-5, 1-2) Loyola, Serra
Serra (4-4, 0-3) Alemany, Chaminade

MULTIPLE POSSIBILITIES IN PLAY FOR CUBS
Based on what has transpired to date and the remaining schedule, Loyola could finish anywhere from tying for first place in the Mission League to last place.

The good news is that the Cubs have proven without a doubt that they can compete with the top teams in the league. Two weeks ago, Loyola soundly defeated Serra, 24-7. League leader Bishop Amat escaped from Gardena last Friday with a close 20-13 win over the Cavaliers.

The Cubs were in position to beat Notre Dame on the road on Friday, but The Knights hung on for a 29-23 victory. On October 4, Notre Dame barely lost, 16-13, to Servite of the Trinity League. Servite soundly defeated JSerra, a state top-ten ranked team, 34-21, last Thursday.

Critical mistakes and some questionable officials’ calls contributed to Friday’s 29-23 loss at Notre Dame, but once again the Cubs showed they can play with any squad in the Mission League.

The goal is to go 1-0 in each of the next two weeks’ contests, and then let the chips fall as they may.  Rest assured, Loyola will show up ready to play. It’s time to make a couple statements.
