Cub Football - Showdown with Cathedral Friday at L.A. Southwest College - Cub Grad update - Loyola action photos
Rivalry dating back to 1927 continues on Friday in 43rd meeting between Loyola and Cathedral
The year was 1927 - The Jazz Singer opened in the era of silent movies . . . work began on the Mount Rushmore sculpture of presidents . . . Charles Lindbergh completed the first solo flight across the Atlantic . . . the Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS) was created . . . Joseph Stalin took control of Russia after Leon Trotsky was expelled from the Communist Party . . . and the Loyola High football team, coached by Larry Devlin, defeated Cathedral, 19-0, in the schools' first-ever clash on the gridiron.
In the ensuing 90 years the Cubs and Phantoms have battled in football 42 times, mostly during the days when both were members of the venerable Catholic League, which changed names to the Del Rey League in 1968. Loyola has a commanding lead in the series, holding an overall 30-12 - 1 advantage. The rivalry had been on hiatus from 1974 until last season, when Cathedral hung on for a 21-19 non-league victory at Smith Field before a packed house.
This Friday the Phantoms host Loyola at L.A. Southwest College (1600 West Imperial Highway at the intersection of Western Avenue), and the Cubs will be looking to avenge last season's loss that saw some questionable sportsmanship at the end of the contest by the Cathedral squad.
It will not be an easy task for Loyola in its bid to upset the Los Angeles Times' twenty-second ranked Southland team. In their first three outings of the 2017 campaign the Phantoms have demolished their overmatched opponents by the combined score of 139-3.
Dynamic sophomore quarterback Bryce Young (6-0, 180) is averaging 346.7 passing yards per contest in Cathedral's four-receiver spread offense. The other top Cathedral stalwarts are dominant junior defensive end Stephan Wright (6-4, 265), senior DB Halid Djibril (6-1, 181), senior outside linebacker Craig Francois (6-3, 210), senior safety Aaron Howard (5-10, 160), and senior wide receiver Cory Payne (5-10, 155). The Phantoms' line corps is in a word massive, with the biggest trench behemoth topping the charts at 6-7, 340 lbs.
Cathedral's schedule has been comparatively weak to date (Santa Fe, Arcadia and Lynwood). There first three foes were not the caliber of Santa Margarita or St. Augustine, whom the Cubs played in their last two contests. The keys for Loyola will be continued outstanding play by the 'Wolfpack' defese, which has caused seven turnovers in Loyola's first three non-league games, and keeping the ball away from the Phantoms' high scoring offense with time-consuming drives. No question the sparks will be flying at Southwest College on Friday night.
Two former Cubs rated best at their positions in last weekend's Pac-12 games
The University of Washington's Rimington Award Finalist COLEMAN SHELTON '13, an All-Serra League offensive lineman at Loyola in 2012, was rated the best center in the Pac-12 in its rating of players after this past weekend's 63-7 Huskies' victory over Montana. CHRIS BROWN '14, a Cub All-CIF offensive lineman in 2013, received the nod as the Pac-12's top left guard in USC's decisive 42-24 victory over Stanford Saturday at the Coliseum.
Sean O'Malley named Patriot League Rookie of the Week
Loyola's all-time passing yardage leader SEAN O'MALLEY '17 is the starting quarterback at Lafayette College. He was named the Patriot League's Rookie of the Week after he passed for 262 yards and three TDs in the Leopards' game against Sacred Heart on Saturday.
