CUB FRESHMEN CONTINUE TO DOMINATE WITH 42-8 DEMOLITION OF CHAMINADE
Few freshmen parents probably remember, and many do not know about, the era when Loyola regularly fielded excellent freshmen squads. But those who do can appreciate at once the history and the future combining in the 2022 Cub freshman team that continues to highly impress.
On Thursday at Smith Field, Loyola (3-0) trounced a good Chaminade team, 42-8, in a game that was not as close as the final score.
The Cubs took the opening kickoff and marched 71 yards behind their powerful offense line, scoring on a short run by SONNY VILLEGAS at the 4:58 mark of the first quarter. KIAN FAHID’s PAT kick made the score 7-0. And the rout was on.
Loyola’s defense overpowered the Eagles, forcing consecutive three-and-outs on the visitors’ first three possessions. Reserves were sprinkled liberally into the starting lineup thereafter. The Eagles were held to 50 yards and two first downs before intermission.
Quarterback JACK THOMAS connected with wide receiver JOSH GALLAGHER for a 33 aerial touchdown just before the half. FAHID’s kick upped the Cubs’ lead to 14-0.
Loyola’s defense forced a Chaminade fumble on the first play from scrimmage after the second half kickoff. Running back EVAN SANTOS, who had great runs throughout the contest, promptly raced 22 yards to pay dirt to increase the Cubs’ lead to 21-0 just 32 seconds into the third quarter.
Quarterback MASYN HARVEY glided into the end zone untouched on a nine-yard run at the 7:23 mark of the third quarter to put Loyola up 28-0. SONNY VILLEGAS scored on his second TD run of the afternoon from seven yards out with 39 seconds remaining in the third quarter to increase the Big Blue’s advantage to 35-0.
Chaminade scored late against the Cub reserves to cut the Cubs lead to 35-8.
Loyola’s ADRIAN MACIAS raced 75 yards down the visitors’ sideline for a TD with the ensuing kickoff, and KAHID’s PAT kick made the final score, 42-8. The Big Blue rolled up over 300 yards of total offense. In three games Loyola has outscored its opponents 120-22 (average score, 40-7).
Among the Cub players, in addition to those mentioned above, who shined were offensive linemen PATRICK PELLIGRINI, DAMIEN UTUONE, NELSON PYE, MATTHEW ALMENDAREZ, JOAQUIN LARA and NATHAN TURK; wide receiver/safety PETER SCIARRINO; wide receiver/linebacker JACKSON NELSON; wide receiver/outside linebacker WES McMULLIN; running back/DB CHASE HELLIE; tight end/inside linebacker RONEN ZAMORANO; inside linebacker LUCA MARUCCI; safety LIAM KRUEGER; linebacker HOLDEN SMYSER; linebacker KRIS LI; defensive lineman ALBERT SANFORD; defensive back CADIN FETTERS; defensive lineman ZACHARY HARRISON; and defensive lineman MAXIMUS BEISCHL. That list is far from complete.
Next Thursday Loyola will host the Inglewood Sentinels at Smith Field at 4:00 p.m. The freshmen have only six games remaining on their schedule. If you want to see an outstanding football squad, make plans to skip out early on a Thursday afternoon.
From 1988 through 2005, Loyola’s varsity program played in the CIF Southern Section Division I championship game seven times and advanced to the Division I semifinal playoff round 12 times.
This freshman team has the talent, depth, warrior culture and chemistry to be a big mover in the success of Cub Football going forward. And maybe to start a similar run to the unprecedented success from the 1980s through 2005.
