Cub Football - More history on Loyola's top ranked state standings - Save date (February 28) for Vanguard dinner meeting

1927-1974 Loyola fielded many teams that were among California's elite squads
CalHi Sports did not begin ranking California's football teams until 1975. In the last email regarding Loyola's top ten and top 20 state-ranked football teams since 1975, no mention was made of the great Cub teams that likely would have been state top ten-ranked had their been such rankings from the the '20s through 1974.

The following Cub squads would all have been considered top ten, or at least top 20, caliber (Catholic schools were not invited to participate in the CIF playoffs until the mid '40s):

1927 - 6-0-2, Head Coach Larry Devlin

1928 - 7-1-2, Head Coach Larry Devlin

1930 - 6-0-2, Head Coach Bernie Donahue

1932 - 7-1-0, Head Coach Al Tassi. League champs

1934 - 6-2-0, Head Coach Al Tassi, League champs

1935 - 7-1-0 Head Coach Al Tassi, California Catholic champs, League champs

1936 - 7-1-0, Head Coach Al Tassi, League camps, defeated CIF Southern Section champ, L.B. Poly

1937 - 8-1-0, Head Coach Bill Sargent, League champs

1938 - 6-1-1, Head Coach Bill Sargent, League Champs

1941 - 6-1-1, Head Coach Blase Miatovich, League Champs

1942 - 7-0-0, Head Coach Tony DeLellis, defeated CIF Southern Section champ, Redondo Union

1944 - 5-1-0, Head Coach Bill Sargent, League Champs

1945 - 7-1-1, Head Coach Bill Sargent, League Champs (Halfback AL POLLARD CIF Large Schools Player-

of-the-Year)

1946 - 10-1-0, Head coach Bill Sargent, League Champs, CIF Southern Section Large Schools runner-up

(Halfback AL POLLARD CIF Large Schools Player-of-the-Year)

1948 - 8-1-0, Head Coach Jack Bouchard

1949 - 7-1-0, Head Coach Jack Bouchard

1950 - 8-3-0, Head Coach Jack Bouchard, League Champs, advanced to CIF Southern Section Large Schools

semifinals

1953 - 7-1-2, Head Coach Jack Bouchard

1961 - 9-2-0, Head Coach Lew Stueck

1962 - 12-0-0, Head Coach Lew Stueck, League Champs, CIF Southern Section AAAA champs (Tailback

STEVE GRADY CIF AAAA Player-of-the-Year)

1963 - 12-0-0, Head Coach Mario DiMuro, League Champs, CIF Southern Section AAAA champs (Lineman

DON SWARTZ CIF AAAA Player-of-the-Year)

1964 - 11-1-0, Head Coach Mario DiMuro, League Champs, CIF Southern Section runner-up (loss in finals

ended 35 game undefeated streak)

1965 - 8-1-0, Head Coach Mario DiMuro, League Champs

1974 - 10-1-0, Head coach Marty Shaugnessy, League Champs

There were fewer games played through the 1960s, but Loyola nonetheless established itself as a state powerhouse and one of the more storied programs in California prep football history.

Cub College Recruiting Updates
Senior Offensive Player-of-the-Year DAKOTA SMITH took a recruiting trip to the University of South Dakota - if Smith accepts a scholarship offer, he would be the first Cub ever to pay for the Coyotes . . . Senior All-Mission League corner ALEX JOHNSON is looking at other schools after a change of head coaches at the University of Montana . . . the University of Arizona has expressed interest in senior punter COLLIN FLINTOFT . . . senior team MVP TOMMY VANIS has been offered a preferred walk-on spot by Cal, and the University of San Diego where Loyola grads DANIEL and DAVID TOLBERT '16 play in the secondary, is making a hard pitch for Vanis's services.

Like father, like son
In 1981,sophomore JASON PARADA '84 started in the secondary for the Del Rey League co-champion Cubs and was named Loyola's Rookie-of-the-Year. Some 36 years later, Jason's son, KEVIN, a sophomore safety on last season's squad, earned All-Mission League accolades and was honored as Loyola's Rookie-of-the-Year. Jason served as the Cubs' inside linebackers' coach, a position group that played a big role on the best scoring defense Loyola fielded since 2004.
