Cub Football - Loyola to make road trip to San Bernardino County tomorrow - THE VANGUARD NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT

Cubs travel to Upland Friday for rubber match
Loyola will take to the road tomorrow for its first game of the delayed 2020 season to take on Upland, the number 50th ranked team in California in a non-league contest.

While the Cubs are ranked ninth in the Southland by the Los Angeles Times,13th in the Southern Section by MaxPreps, and 23rd in the state by CalHi Sports they will be tested by a very physical Highlander squad that showed well in last weekend's scrimmage against perennial Southern Section powerhouse Corona Centennial.

Upland's big, fast front seven will try to put constant pressure on Loyola's inexperienced offensive line, while the Scots' offense will attempt to pound it on the ground with their powerful rushing attack, which features a fullback and frequent two tight end sets.

The Scots are picked to finish second in the rugged Baseline League behind league title favorite and defending league champion Rancho Cucamonga. Upland returns five offensive starters and five defensive starters from its 2019 team which finished 6-6, but made it to the quarterfinal round of the CIF playoffs.

Highlanders' head coach Darryl Thomas lost more than a few very talented players from his 2019 Baseline League runner-up squad, but he does have many solid returnees, including senior four-star outside linebacker Jonathan Flowe (6-3, 220), talented senior running back Julian Dedman (5-10, 190) and mammoth senior offensive lineman Sitaiai Maileoi (6-4, 298).

Winner of Friday's contest will take the series lead
The Cubs and Scots have played twice with each team notching a win. Friday's winner will own a 2-1 series lead. Loyola recorded a 30-13 upset victory over Upland at Valley College in the teams' first meeting in 2010, but was beaten, 38-23, by a very physical, talented Highlanders’ squad on the road in 2011. The Big Blue finished the 2011 campaign 8-3.

What Loyola needs to notch a season-opening victory
Loyola probably will need to hit some big chunk offensive plays early and often to neutralize a Highlanders' defense that likes to blitz and apply relentless pressure. Defensively the Cub 'Wolfpack' must be stalwart at the line of scrimmage to slow down Upland's power running game.

Unfortunately, only three Loyola family members per player will be allowed to attend the game. At this time it is not known if the contest will be available for viewing by Live-Stream
