Cub Football - Loyola suffers worst loss in football annals in 52-0 demolition at the hands of Chaminade
EAGLES SCORE ON EVERY OFFENSIVE POSSESSION SAVE FOR GAME-ENDING KNEEL DOWN IN HANDING LOYOLA ITS WORST DEFEAT IN SCHOOL HISTORY
Before a smattering of fans in West Hills on Friday night Chaminade scored on every one of its offensive possessions save for a game-ending kneel down in a 52-0 demolition of Loyola which constituted the worst loss suffered by the Cubs in school history.
After forging a dominant 38-0 halftime lead, the Eagles tacked on another 14 points after intermission in what only can be characterized as an ignominious defeat in a Mission League contest that effectively eliminated Loyola (4-5, 1-4) from any shot at consideration for an at-large berth in the CIF Southern Section playoffs which get underway on November 7.
Chaminade was simply bigger, faster, stronger and more athletic than a Cub team that many hoped would give the Eagles formidable resistance before the opening kickoff.
Loyola fumbled on the first offensive play of the game after a 13-yard run, and the Eagles immediately went 34 yards in five plays, scoring on a 10-yard run at the 9:44 mark of the first quarter to start a scoring avalanche of epic proportion.
Chaminade kicked a 42-yard field goal with 41 seconds left in the first quarter to increase its lead to 10-0, and thereafter imposed its will scoring four more first half TDs on take-no-prisoners drives of 57, 80, 70 and 70 yards, which included a 70-yard TD run and a 60-yard scoring pass.
Meanwhile, the Cubs’ other first half possessions ended in a turnover on downs, four punts and the expiration of time.
With a running clock in the second half the Eagles scored on 56 and 72-yard drives. Unofficially, Chaminade amassed over 500 yards of total offense while Loyola mustered less than 140.
Indeed, the Cubs demonstrated laudable determination in their first eight games after many of their starters transferred, but the law of averages finally caught up with them in what by any account was a dismal, disheartening defeat.
Loyola will host the state’s third-ranked team, Sierra Canyon (9-0, 4-0), in its final Mission League contest of the season on Halloween. That is a scary matchup as the undefeated Trailblazers trounced Chaminade 45-14.
