Cub Football - Loyola shows promise at Charter Oak Tournament
Cubs look good in first 7-on-7 tournament
Loyola played in the 24-team Charter Oak Tournament in Covina on Saturday and looked promising in its first big competitive outing of the spring. Junior quarterback NATHAN PRIESTLEY was sharp in distributing the ball to a number of receivers throughout the tournament, and the defense showed well in stopping drives and breaking on the ball.
In pool play the Cubs defeated Arroyo and tied Ayala after a controversial official's call gave Ayala a touchdown when it was stopped a yard short of the goal line on a fourth down play late in the game. Loyola defeated Damien with relative ease in the final pool contest.
Loyola received a bye in the first round of the 24-team tournament championship as it was seeded sixth. The Cubs let their second round encounter get away from them and fell to Sierra Canyon after making a gallant comeback attempt.
Among the positive take-aways from the hot.Saturday in Covina were that Loyola showed toughness and determination, a good passing game and physicality on defense.
A number of players stood out for the Cubs in addition to Priestley. Senior safety TOMMY VANIS, senior wide receiver DAKOTA SMITH, senior linebacker JACK FITZGERALD, junior wide receiver/safety ALEX BLAKE, senior corners DEAMIL AGUILAR and NATHAN BUSTOS, senior running back/nickel JACOB McBRIDE, senior linebacker BRAYDEN UTLEY, senior running back MICHAEL GRAVES, sophomore receiver/DB KEVIN PARADA and senior linebacker JORDAN McMILLAN all looked good.
Every Wednesday during spring practice the Cubs hold 7-on-7 scrimmages against other schools at Smith Field.
