NEW NON-LEAGUE FOES ON SCHEDULETHIS FALL
Loyola will play Valencia of Valencia and Vista Murrieta this fall, the latter in the first meeting ever between the two programs. The other non-league opponents are Fairfax, San Diego St. Augustine and Cathedral.
PAUL HORGAN AND AL POLLARD WERE CIF SOUTHERN SECTION PLAYERS OF THE YEAR DESPITE NOT PLAYING ON FINALS TEAMS
AL POLLARD '47 was a two-time CIF Southern Section Large Schools Player of the Year in 1945 and 1946. The half back earned the honor as a junior notwithstanding that the Cubs only advanced to the playoff semifinals. The following season Pollard repeated as Player-of-the-Year after the Big Blue fell by a point to Alhambra in the CIF Large Schools championship game.
Single wing tailback PAUL HORGAN '62 was the CIF AAAA Player-of -the Year in 1961 despite Loyola being eliminated from the AAAA playoffs in the semifinals. Historically, the CIF Player-of-the-Year is a participant in the championship finals. It tells you a lot about the talent of Pollard (in 1945) and Horgan to earn the honor despite the team not playing in the finals. Pollard played for Army West Point and Horgan played at UCLA after their graduations from The High.
Loyola's nine other CIF Players-of-the-Year selections all played in title games, and five for CIF AAAA/Div. I championship squads (STEVE GRADY in 1962, DON SWARTZ in 1963, DREW CASANI in 1990, SCOTT DEKE in 2003 and HENRY BURGE in 2005). ANTOINE HARRIS (1996) and MATT WARE (2000) played on CIF Div. I finalist teams.
