Cub Football - Loyola finishes with flurry in first seven-on-seven passing competition of summer
Loyola hosts first seven-on-seven passing competition of summer, defeats Chaminade in final game
Loyola hosted its first of five seven-on-seven passing competitions of the summer at Smith Field on Thursday afternoon. In addition to the Cub contingent, the other participants included the Locke Saints of the Los Angeles City Section, the Los Angeles Romans of the Los Angeles City Section and Mission League rival West Hills Chaminade of Division I of the Southern Section. The Eagles are expected to be ranked among the top ten teams in the Southland in preseason polls.
The highlight of the afternoon was Loyola's three touchdowns-to-one victory over Chaminade in the final game. Senior quarterback NATHAN PRIESTLEY was nearly flawless in delivering the ball to Cub receivers. Priestley did a great job of locating open targets and delivered the ball with zip and accuracy. No pass and catch was more impressive than a perfectly placed deep Priestley throw down the middle to sophomore wide receiver ZAKHARI SPEARS, who caught the ball in stride in the end zone on a fourth down play to tally the Loyola's second six-pointer. Junior signal caller DAVIS WARREN also threw the ball well. The 'Wolfpack' defense played with suddenness and focus as it stymied the Eagles' touted aerial attack.
The hands down player of the day for the Cubs was sophomore wide receiver/defensive back CEYAIR WRIGHT. Wright performed as a true shut down corner all afternoon. He intercepted two passes and had a number of breakups, while consistently making catches on the offensive side of the ball, showing off speed and elusiveness in garnering yards after catch.
One thing was clear coming out of the first day of seven-on-seven competition, Loyola's passing game will be significantly improved over last season.
