Cub Football, Huge basketball coaching hire and Spring sports updates
RISING SENIOR EDGE MAX MEIER MAKES COMMITMENT TO STANFORD, JOINING BRANDON LOCKHART AND NATHAN TURK IN CHOOSING COLLEGIATE DESTINATIONS
Rising senior All-State junior class Edge MAX MEIER (6-6, 251), Loyola’s 2024 sack leader, committed to play for and study at Stanford University following his graduation from Loyola.
MEIER is the third Cub Class of 2026 player to make his college commitment, joining All-American corner BRANDON LOCKHART, who gave his pledge to USC, and All-CIF offensive tackle NATHAN TURK, who accepted an offer from Harvard University.
Rising senior All-State running back SEAN MORRIS II and rising senior All-Mission League wide receiver MARKUS KIER have multiple FBS Power Four scholarship offers, and are likely to make their college choices before the conclusion of the 2025 campaign. Having no less than five players with major college commitments/offers certainly bodes well heading into the 2025 season.
SEAN MORRIS II CONTINUES TO RECORD IMPRESSIVE TIMES IN TRACK
SEAN MORRIS II (5-10, 205) is taking full advantage of his participation as a member of Loyola’s track & field team. His sprint work will make him all the more dangerous on the gridiron this fall. The rising senior All-State running back recently ran a PR 10.76 in the 100 meter dash.
MORRIS has a chance to break the all-time Cub rushing record set by MIKE BERGDAHL ‘65 in 1963 and 1964.
LOYOLA HIRES HIGHLY ACCOMPLISHED HOOPS COACH CAMERON JOYCE
Loyola this week announced the hiring of CAMERON “CAM” JOYCE as its new varsity basketball coach. To say the Akron, Ohio, native has an impressive coaching resume would be an understatement.
The 36-year old JOYCE comes from a program, St. Ignatius of Cleveland, which he led to unprecedented heights.
During his remarkable six-year tenure as the head man of the Wildcats’ hoops program, the Jesuit prep school won the 2024 Ohio State Championship, captured five consecutive District Championships, won four Division I Regional titles, and made four trips to the Final Four of the highest Division in the Buckeye State.
JOYCE was twice named the Ohio State Coach-of-the-Year. Twenty of his former players are currently playing collegiate basketball.
The new Cub coach is a 2007 graduate of St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in Akron, where his father coached LeBron James. Joyce’s friendship with the NBA star may see an appearance by the hoops legend at future Loyola games in Leavey Gymnasium.
JOYCE was a three-time team captain on the basketball squad at Northwood University (NCAA Division II).
The fact that Loyola is a Jesuit college preparatory, as is St. Ignatius, made the job attractive to JOYCE, as did the high level of competition the Cubs face annually in the nationally renowned Mission League.
By any measure, the hiring of Joyce shows an absolute commitment to athletic excellence on the part of current Principal and incoming President JAMAL ADAMS ‘97, who clearly embraces the Jesuit ethos of Magis.
