There have been some great goal line stands and victory-clinching fourth-and-inches stops by the Cub 'Wolfpack' defense over the decades.
Loyola's goal line stop against sate number one-ranked Fountain Valley in overtime of the CIF Southern Section Big Five Conference quarterfinal playoff game before a standing-room-only crowd at Santa Monica College in 1977 ranks among the greatest defensive stands in Cub football annals.
The fourth down stop of Fontana two inches short of a first down late in the game in the 1990 CIF Southern Section Division I quarterfinals before an overflow crowd at Moyse Field in Glendale was one for the ages. Loyola went on to win the CIF Division I championship two weeks later at Anaheim Stadium.
One of the biggest stops of all time in league play was All-CIF defensive tackle MIKE LONG's '98 behind-the-line tackle of Bishop Amat's running back on fourth and less than a yard, deep in Loyola territory, with less than two minutes to play, to preserve a 3-0 Cub triumph over the Lancers at Monsignor Cranham Stadium in La Puente in 1997.
