FRIDAY’S CIF SOUTHERN SECTION DIVISION 5 SEMIFINALS MATCHUPS

Redondo (8-4) at LOYOLA (6-6)

La Serna (9-3) @ Rio Hondo Prep (12-0)

LOYOLA’S IMPRESSIVE HISTORY IN THE RAREFIED AIR OF THE CIF SOUTHERN SECTION PLAYOFF SEMIFINALS

Loyola first played in a CIF Southern Section semifinal playoff game in 1946. Led by two-time CIF Southern Section Large Schools Player of the Year halfback AL POLLARD ‘47-dubbed the “Loyola Express” by the press-the Cubs defeated Huntington Beach, 20-6.

Since then, Loyola has played in another 20 CIF Southern Section semifinal playoff contests.

The Cubs have won 13 of their 21 (62%) semifinal battles.

Loyola played in five consecutive CIF Southern Section Division I playoff semifinal games from 1988 through 1992, competed in three consecutive CIF Division I final four contests from 1995 through 1997, and three consecutive CIF AAAA semifinal games from 1962 through 1965.

Friday’s CIF Division 5 semifinal contest marks the Cubs’ twenty-second trip to the final four in football.

Loyola has won six of nine semifinal games played in odd-numbered years.

If the Cubs win on Friday, they will make their fourteenth trip to the CIF Southern Section championship game.
