Loyola officially opens fall football practice today
After a short respite from the grind of summer training, the 2017 Loyola varsity football team opens fall practice today at Smith Field, which recently reopened after the track was replaced and permanent lighting was installed. The squad takes the field at 1:45 p.m.
Those new facility upgrades are not the only welcome additions to the program. Longtime assistant, RICK PEDROARIAS '84, will be leading the Cubs in his first season as the steward of the Loyola football program. Coach Pedroarias welcomes all Loyola supporters to watch his team practice throughout fall camp.
Outsiders are predicting a less than stellar season for Loyola this fall, but Pedroarais is having none of that. He is confident his troops can be competitive in the quest for a playoff spot in what is widely considered the most challenging playoff division (CIF Southern Section Division I) in the state, if not the nation.
Among the positions of strength is the spot behind center. Strong-armed junior quarterback NATHAN PRIESTLEY (6-4, 192) is battling it out with talented freshman signal caller MILLER MOSS (6-0, 181) for the starting role.
The wide receiver corps is also talented. The group has no less than six players who can catch and run. Among the standouts are seniors DEAMIL AQUILAR (5-8, 155) ALEX JOHNSON (6-1, 171, first team All-Mission League DB in '16), DAKOTA SMITH (6-2, 209) and TOMMY VANIS (6-1, 210); junior ALEX BLAKE (6-1, 192); and sophomore KEVIN PARADA (6-0, 185). Senior running backs JACOB McBRIDE (5-8, 174) and MICHAEL GRAVES (5-8, 178) have shown good receiving skills out of the backfield.
The Cubs host Redondo Union under the lights in an interscholastic scrimmage in just nineteen days on August 18. Loyola's first game is on August 25 at Smith Field at 7:00 p.m. against Fairfax of the Los Angeles City Section.

Loyola's uber talented 2015 Cub MVP/All-State Special Mention athlete MYLES BRYANT was singled out by University of Washington head coach Chris Petersen over the weekend as the Huskies prepare for their 2017 campaign.
Bryant would have started and starred on every Cub squad in any season in the storied annals of Loyola's football program. That is how talented and tough he is. Bryant contributed at wide receiver, corner, running back, nickel back and as a punt and kick returner in helping lead the Cubs (9-3) to the number 17 final state ranking after the 2015 season.
