Cub Football - Everone invited to practice Saturday - A look at Loyola grads in college football
Coach Pedroarias invites supporters to Saturday's football practice
Loyola varsity head coach RICK PEDROARIAS is inviting all supporters of Cub Football to come out on Saturday, July 15, at 11:15 a.m. to watch practice on Hank Hernandez Field at Shepherd Park (Smith Field will be closed until early August as a new track is being installed). The Cubs are working hard to prepare for a challenging 2017 schedule.
Permanent lights installed at Smith Field
For the first time in Loyola's 152 year history there will be permanent lighting on an athletic field on campus. Take a look at the new lights which illuminate Bob Smith Field at loyolahs.edu on the school's athletics twitter site. Smith Field will continue to serve as the venue for all varsity home football games until a permanent home stadium is built.
Thirty-six former Cubs playing college football
Loyola will be represented by 36 alumni on college football rosters this season. COLEMAN SHELTON, a 2012 Cub All-Serra League lineman, has been an ironman at the University of Washington as he has seen time at every offensive line position as a three-year starter. An All-Pac 12 performer, the Huskies' 6-4, 297 lb. starting center is on both the Outland Trophy and Rimington Trophy Watch Lists, which include college football's top centers and linemen, respectively. He is also projected as the second best center on NFL 2018 draft projections. Shelton's teammate, 2015 Loyola MVP/All-Mission League and CalHiSports All-State defensive back MYLES BRYANT is slated to start for Washington at nickel back. The scholarship DB had a 60 yard pick six during the spring for the Huskies.
All-CIF/All-State tackle CHRIS BROWN '14 (6-5, 305), who was Loyola's MVP in 2012, is number one on the depth chart at left guard for the USC Trojans. All-Mission League defensive lineman and Cub team defensive MVP CHRISTIAN RECTOR '15 (6-5, 275) is a second team defensive end at USC where he is expected to see considerable playing time on the Trojans' defense. All-Serra League linebacker REUBEN PETERS '14 is now USC's starting fullback.
DAVID LONG, a U.S. Army All-American/All-State/All-CIF Div. I defensive back on Loyola's 2015 squad that finished the season ranked 17th in the state, will start at corner for the Wolverines of the University ofMichigan.
All-CIF Div. I tailback NICO EVANS '13 is vying for the starting running back slot at the University of Wyoming
There are twelve former Cubs on the rosters of PAC-12 football programs. Twenty-two Loyola graduates are playing on Football Bowl Subdivision teams.
