Cub Football - Danny Farmer exemplified the benefits of playing multiple sports - Cub Soccer hosts Santa Ana
Loyola's Danny Farmer '95 was a multi-sport star athlete at Loyola which helped him make it to the NFL
One of Loyola's greatest all-time athletes, DANNY FARMER '95, dazzled his coaches and countless fans during his four years representing the Cubs on the gridiron, basketball court and at the volleyball net. Farmer was named the CIF Southern Section volleyball Player-of-the-Year after leading Loyola to the 1995 CIF Division I title. He was also an electric basketball standout and an acrobatic all-league.wide receiver.
Farmer was one of a handful of modern era NCAA college athletes to play and excel in two intercollegiate sports. As a wide receiver, Farmer was so prolific as a pass catcher that he still holds the UCLA all-time receptions record. He was also instrumental in leading the Bruins' volleyball squad to the National Championship. His incredible athletic prowess led him to a career in the NFL as a wide receiver.
Many professional and college coaches have commented of late that they look for athletes with multi-sport backgrounds because their skill sets, competitive nature and ability to execute so many physically challenging tasks translate into high level production. Year round training in particular sports at the high school level has caused multi-sport participation to dwindle, but there are still athletes who are following in Farmer's footsteps.
Keep an eye on 6' 3" Cub freshman ZAKHARI SPEARS. He was the freshman football MVP, a top player on the league champion freshman basketball team (22-4, 12-0) and won his 100m heat at Loyola's season-opening Blue-White track meet on Saturday. Freshman CEYAIR WRIGHT led the Cub freshman football team with seven interceptions and is now playing baseball for the Cubs. He and Spears are still finding time to make football weight training. Spears and Wright are just two examples of Loyola athletes who refuse to be concentrate on just one sport.
