Cub Football - Blue-White scrimmages on Saturday
LOYOLA BLUE-WHITE SCRIMMAGES SCHEDULED FOR THIS SATURDAY - NEW FACES EVERYWHERE - CUBS IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL
Loyola will hold its annual Blue-White scrimmages this Saturday at Smith Field on campus.
The varsity scrimmage is scheduled to kick off at 9:00 a.m., the sophomores will play at 10:30 a.m., and the freshman squad competition will get underway at noon.
LOOKING AHEAD TO THE SEASON
With the exodus of so many talented players from a team that was anticipated to be one of the top prep football squads in California, fall camp had a slew of new faces at multiple positions on both sides of the ball.
The team will indeed have a different look than the one which was originally expected to take the field this season.
It will be interesting to see how the players who are stepping up will perform against what is a brutal schedule. Five teams the Cubs will compete against are included in the Los Angeles Times preseason Top 25 and additional teams to watch. Sierra Canyon is ranked fourth, Serra is ranked eighth, Cathedral is in the 11th spot, Sherman Oaks Notre Dame is ranked 24th and L.B.Millikan is listed among seven other teams to watch.
There are many players who have impressed thus far including returning All-State/All-Mission League senior offensive tackle NATE TURK, senior center NELSON PYE III, senior fullback/ linebacker HOLDEN SMYSER, senior tight end/defensive end ZACH HARRISON, junior running back XAVIER WIMBLEY, junior safety GAGE SANTOS, junior wide receiver SAM FRIEND and sophomore WR BRANDON ALEXANDER.
Stanford-bound senior All-State/All-Mission League Edge MAX MEIER earned his fourth star from recruiting guru Tom Lemming. He promises to have a game wrecking presence on Loyola’s’Wolfpack defensive squad.
Hard hitting senior safety PETER SCIARRINO recently committed to USC as a preferred walk-on.
ANSWERS TO THE QUESTION WHY SO MANY PLAYERS LEFT THE PROGRAM BEST POSED TO THOSE WHO DEPARTED
Many readers of the newsletter have inquired as to why an unprecedented number of players chose to leave the program. There were a number of reasons cited by the parents of the players who left, and there were many in common (communication and off-season agenda). This is not the best vehicle to analyze what is a highly controversial subject, but obviously the program will need to address issues going forward.
Suffice to say that the Jesuit ethos of Magis should be applicable to all endeavors. This is not intended to duck the questions, but the inquiries would be best answered directly by the families who exited.
