Cub Football - Big game Friday - Updated statistical leaders - Alumni Dinner on November 4 to honor three former Loyola football players
LOYOLA'S FRIDAY HOME GAME AGAINST PARACLETE EXPECTED TO DRAW HUGE CROWD GIVEN THE STAKES
Loyola (3-5, 2-1) enters Friday's critical Angelus League battle on a two-game conference winning streak. Paraclete (6-2, 1-2), on the other hand, comes into the contest on a two-game league losing skid, after compiling a 6-0 record.
For the Cubs, the goal is to not only notch a third consecutive conference victory while taking a step closer to earning a playoff berth, but also to continue to build on the momentum which started with their impressive 25-11 win over St. Paul on October 6.
Paraclete's goal is stay alive in the race for one of the three guaranteed CIF Southern Section playoff invitations afforded to the six-school Angelus League circuit. If the Spirits drop to 1-3 in conference play with a loss to Loyola, it is possible they could end the campaign without an at-large playoff invitation.
Paraclete's head coach, John Perez, was ejected during the Spirits' 40-28 loss to St. Paul in Santa Fe Springs last Friday, and as a result is banned, by CIF rules, from coaching against the Cubs in Friday's titanic contest. It is fair to anticipate that Paraclete's players will turn it up a notch to win one for their suspended head coach.
The CalPreps' projection is for a down-to-the-wire one-point differential separating the teams. The squad that makes the fewest mistakes will likely come away with the all-important victory.
The Senior Night kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Smith Field. A large crowd is anticipated for the battle. Try to make it out to the game to support the Big Blue as they seek to continue their upward climb.
A LOOK AT CUB STATISTICAL LEADERS
Loyola's upward momentum has been propelled primarily by great production in the ground game-the Cubs' rushing attack has gained 523 yards in the last two outings-and shut-down defensive efforts. Loyola held St. Paul to 11 points and 88 yards of total offense, with two Swordsmen scores coming on short fields following turnovers, and the first string stop unit relinquished only seven points to Crespi before the reserves took over last Friday.
