TWO LOYOLA PLAYERS EARN ANGELUS LEAGUE MVP HONORS
Loyola senior running back TAHJ OWENS was named the 2021 Angelus League’s Most Valuable Player, and his senior teammate, safety JACKSON SHEA, was honored as the conference’s Defensive Player-of-the-Year for their roles in helping the Cubs capture their second consecutive Angelus League championship.
OWENS, the only running back in Loyola football history to earn All-CIF accolades as a sophomore (2019), had a brilliant senior campaign. He amassed 2,049 all-purpose yards, including 1,651 rushing yards on 220 carries (7.5 yds. per carry). The talented athlete scored 20 rushing touchdowns. He was also a stellar kick returner and saw duty in the secondary as a lock-down defender.
SHEA was the quarterback of the Cub ‘Wolfpack’ secondary. He had an outstanding campaign as a savvy, hard nosed, ball hawking safety.
FIFTEEN CUBS GARNER ALL-LEAGUE ALL-LEAGUE ACCOLADES
In addition to the MVP honors earned by OWENS and SHEA, thirteen Loyola players garnered All-Angelus League recognition.

ANTHONY BARR NOMINATED FOR NFL MAN-OF-YEAR
Loyola alumnus ANTHONY BARR ‘10, who won the Lott Award as the best collegiate defensive player in the nation as a senior at UCLA and was a two-time All-American, is a four-time All-Pro linebacker with the Minnesota Vikings. His team nominated the 6-5, 255 lb. inside linebacker for the prestigious 2021 NFL Walter Payton Man-of-the-Year Award. The winner of the award will be announced shortly before the Super Bowl which will be held at Los Angeles’ SoFi Stadium.
COLEMAN SHELTON AND DAVID LONG, JR. START IN SAME GAME FOR LOS ANGELES RAMS
Former All-League Cub offensive tackle COLEMAN SHELTON ‘13 and Loyola All-American/ All-State/All-CIF corner DAVID LONG, Jr. ‘16, started the entire game for the Los Angeles Rams in their December 13 win against the Arizona Cardinals, at center and corner, respectively. It marked the first time two former Cub players started in for the same NFL team.
Long was an All-Big-Ten corner at Michigan. And Shelton was an All-PAC-12 offensive lineman at the University of Washington.
MYLES BRYANT ‘16 MAKING NAME FOR HIMSELF IN NEW ENGLAND
Former Loyola MVP (2015) and All-State athlete MYLES BRYANT ‘16, is excelling as a defensive back for the New England Patriots. On December 6, Bryant made a game saving pass breakup in the waning moments of the Patriots’ win over the Buffalo Bills. He was the subject of a fantastic recent feature Boston Globe article, with numerous references to his time as a Cub.
HUGE DAY FOR FORMER CUB IN BIG 12 CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
Former Cub All-Mission League lineman BRAYDEN UTLEY ‘18 forced a quarterback hurry that resulted in an interception for the Baylor Bears in the Big 12 championship game against Oklahoma State. The defensive lineman also had an interception. Both plays were pivotal in Baylor’s 21–16 victory. The Bears and Utley will play Ole Miss in the Sugar Bowl on January 1.
LOYOLA COLLEGE COMMITMENTS
On December 15th’s National Letter of Intent signing day, three-year Loyola offensive line starter SAM YOON (6-5, 301) inked his scholarship letter with the UCLA Bruins. Wide receiver JACOBY KELLY (6-2, 195) signed with San Diego State.
Angelus League MVP TAHJ OWENS (5-11, 190) will study and play football for Princeton University, which is the number one-ranked national university by U.S. News.
Team leading All-Angelus League tackler, linebacker PATRICK SODL (5-11, 205), has committed to play for Columbia of the Ivy League as did defensive lineman SHAWN LIN (6-4, 250)
it is remarkable that three Loyola players will be continuing their academic and football careers for Ivy League institutions.
Quarterback JOE TATUM, who threw for over 2,200 yards and 23 TDs this season for the Cubs, will be an invited walk on at the University of Texas.

UCLA-bound Loyola offensive lineman SAM YOON was selected to the Los Angeles Times’ Southland All-Star football team.
