Cub Football - A look at what sets Loyola apart
Loyola one of three Jesuit institutions to be ranked among top ten Catholic high schools in nation
Sometime lost amid the discussion of Cub Football is the fact that one of the program's most impressive calling cards is the unparalleled excellence of the school on the academic side.
A recent article in Town & Country magazine (see link below) listed the top ten Catholic high schools in the nation. Loyola was ranked seventh, and not surprisingly, two other Jesuit secondary institutions (Regis High School of New York City and Strake Jesuit College Preparatory School in Houston) were ranked first and fifth.
The rankings were formulated by Niche, a company that specializes in gathering detailed data (including students' college admission test scores, AP test results and the number of admissions to elite colleges and universities) for the purpose of evaluating and ranking schools at every level and of every variety. There are 1,205 Catholic high schools in the nation. Loyola's ranking puts it in the top one percent on Catholic secondary schools in the United States.
This year's commencement saw Cub graduates matriculate at each one of the Ivy League schools (Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, Penn, Brown, Dartmouth and Cornell), including seven at Columbia and four at Penn. Loyola grads from the Class of 2017 are also headed to such elite institutions as Stanford, MIT, the University of Chicago, Duke, Johns Hopkins, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Emory, Washington University in St. Louis, Georgetown and U.C. Berkeley, all top 20 universities. One third of this year's graduating class will be attending top 25-ranked universities. It is therefore no wonder that Loyola is a national top ten-ranked Catholic college preparatory and the number one all-boys Catholic high school in the state of California.
It is Loyola's academic prowess, outstanding co-curricular programs and athletic excellence (the school has earned a record nine CIF Southern Section Commissioner's Cups as the top athletic school in the 584- member Southern Section) which makes it second to none among Catholic secondary schools in the state.
Under the leadership of new varsity head football coach, Dr. RICARDO PEDROARIAS '84, and 18 former Cub football players out of 24 coaches on the staffs of the freshman, sophomore and varsity teams, it will not be long before Loyola football returns to prominence.
Certainly, families who consider education the most important factor in choosing a college preparatory school for their student athlete sons should be looking very closely at Loyola.

Loyola scrimmages Redondo Union on Friday under new permanent lighting at Smith Field
In preparation for its home opener against Fairfax on August 25, the Cubs will scrimmage Redondo Union at all levels this Friday at Smith Field, marking the first time in school history the varsity will play under illumination provided by permanent lighting. Head coach RICK PEDROARIAS is calling on all Loyola grads, all members of the Loyola gridiron vanguard and all supporters of Cub Football to be in attendance as the 2017 Cub Football season officially gets underway this Friday.
The freshman scrimmage the Sea Hawks at 4:00 p.m., the sophomore team goes at 5:15 p.m. and the varsity scrimmages at 6:30 p.m.
Cub defense looking stout
It is true in most sports that strength up the middle enhances a team's chances for success, and it looks like the spine of Loyola's 'Wolfpack' defense from front to back will be stout this season. Rugged inside linebackers, tough down linemen and physical safeties should make the center of the Cub stop crew tough to penetrate.
Heading into Friday's scrimmage against Redondo Union, senior team captain TOMMY VANIS (6-1, 210) and senior JACOB McBRIDE (5-8, 174) are slated to start at the strong and quick end/outside linebacker slots, respectively. The defensive tackle positions will be manned by a rotation comprised of athletic senior BRAYDEN UTLEY (6-3, 232), and quick, physical juniors SCOTT KASE (6-2, 212) and MARCUS AGUILAR (6-0, 204). Fast rising sophomore SAM DOMINGUEZ (6-2, 222) will start at nose guard.
Senior inside linebacker JACK FITZGERALD (6-1, 248) is a beast at the Stud spot and senior inside 'backer JORDAN McMILLAN (6-0, 198) brings excellent range to the Whip position.
Two physical underclassmen, junior ALEX BLAKE (6-0, 192) and sophomore KEVIN PARADA (6-0, 185) will patrol the back end of the secondary at free and strong safety, respectively.
Two senior speedsters will operate at the corner positions, all-league first team returnee ALEX JOHNSON (6-1, 171) and NATHAN BUSTOS (5-8, 160). Both were sprinters on last spring's undefeated Mission League champion track & field team.
