Cub Football - A look at the 2022 Loyola football schedule
LOYOLA HAS TWO NEW LEAGUE MEMBERS - 2022 SCHEDULE RELEASED
Only 141 days remain before the Loyola football 2022 season opener. Anticipation for the fall campaign is already building among the Cub Football faithful.
The Angelus League has expanded to five schools with the addition of Lancaster Paraclete and Los Angeles Cathedral.
The top three teams from the league will qualify for the CIF Southern Section playoffs.
The 2022 campaign will mark the first time Loyola will compete against Oaks Christian, a non-league opponent, and Paraclete on the gridiron.
HERE IS A LOOK AT THE 2022 10-GAME REGULAR SEASON SCHEDULE
August 26
DAMIEN (Smith Field)
Loyola squeezed by a young, talented Spartan squad in La Verne, 16-14 in its first 2021 road trip. Damien was highly ranked entering the ‘21 campaign but stumbled to a 3-7 overall finish and a 0-4 record in the rugged Baseline League, won by Etiwanda, which defeated the Cubs, 28-21, in the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division 3 playoffs. The Spartans again should be highly ranked entering the 2022 campaign as a young squad that lost five games by five or fewer points, including one-point setbacks to Rancho Cucamonga and Chino Hills and a three-point overtime loss to Orange Lutheran, returns good players in every position group. Senior QB Dylan Guttierez brings impressive stats from last season (1,685 passing yards and 829 rushing yards). As a freshman RB Steve Chavez rushed for 692 yards (6.2 ypc). With multiple other starters coming back, Damien could prove to be Loyola’s toughest foe this fall.
September 2
@CULVER CITY
The Bay League runners-up Centaurs were destroyed by the Cubs last fall, 62-14. Behind a huge campaign by freshman QB Alonzo Esparza, Culver City finished the 2021 season with a 7-4 record. Unfortunately for the Centaurs, Esparza has transferred to Sierra Canyon, so their high scoring offense may not be as prolific this fall. Senior receiver Ethan Harris had 911 yards in receptions last fall.
September 9
@ PASADENA
The Bulldogs finished 9-3 last fall with a trip to the CIF playoff semifinals, where they lost to San Bernardino Aquinas, 31-21. Pasadena, the 2021 Pacific League champs (it’s rivalry league game against Muir was cancelled because of COVID-19), will lose their starting quarterback, top running backs and wide receivers to graduation. The Bulldogs have a lot of holes to fill.
September 16
CHAMINADE (Smith Field)
Long time head coach Ed Croson called it a career after the 2021 campaign. Regarded as one of the best head coaches in the state over the last three decades, Croson will be missed by the Eagles who ended last season with a 5-5 ledger and a fourth place finish in the tough Mission League. Chaminade returns its best receiver, senior Noah Elliott (440 receiving yards). It will be interesting to see if the Eagles will continue to soar as they did under Croson.
September 23
@ OAKS CHRISTIAN
Despite a .500 record (7-7), the Lions made it all the way to the 2021 CIF playoff finals, where they lost to Valencia, 28-14 in the championship tilt. Last season’s starting quarterback threw for 2,193 yards, but he will be lost to graduation. Oaks Christian returns senior running back Johnny Thompson who rushed for 929 yards (6.3 ypc) last fall. The Lions are a traditional power, so the trek to Westlake Village will be a challenging one.
September 30
@ St. PAUL*
The Swordsmen upset the Cubs, 36-35, in last season’s Angelus League finale to earn a share of the Angelus League title. St. Paul concluded the 2021 campaign with an 8-2 record. They fell to Upland, 24-13, in the first round of the CIF playoffs. Uber talented quarterback Isaiah Dunn is graduating, but a well coached, solid group of underclass players will keep the Swordsmen competitive. Contests at “The Pit” in Santa Fe Springs are always competitive.
October 7
CRESPI* (Smith Field)
Loyola routed the Celts, 45-20, in Encino last fall. Crespi struggled in a 2-7 finish, but the Celts return senior QB Brayden Everitt, a talented dual threat signal caller (1,495 passing yards and 998 rushing yards) and their second leading receiver, Holden Gering (454 yds.).
October 14
@ PARACLETE*
The former Gold Coast League team joins the newly expanded Angelus League and returns a number of good players which should make the Spirits a factor in the conference race. Paraclete has a top notch running game back in Kai Brown (77.3 yards per game). Sophomore receiver Isaiah Solis is a playmaker and senior defensive end Jeffrey Bower is a force. The Spirits had a 5-6 record last fall. The trip to the high desert will probably see a cold, windy night reminiscent of Loyola’s away games against one time powerhouse Antelope Valley in the 1980s and 1990s.
October 21
CATHEDRAL* (Smith Field)
After a short stint in the Mission League, the Phantoms, a long time Loyola rival, return to Angelus League this fall. Cathedral which lost to the Cubs, 34-6, in a non-league contest last season struggled in the tough Mission League and ended the 2021 campaign with a 1-8 record. Senior QB Aidan Moss (850 passing and 325 rushing yards) returns. The top four Phantom receivers also will be coming back this fall. The Phantoms have nowhere to go but up.
October 28
ST. FRANCIS* (Smith Field)
St. Francis concluded the 2021 campaign with a 10-3 record, shared the Angelus League crown with Loyola and St. Paul and earned a runner-up finish in the CIF Div. 4 playoffs after a 38-7 loss at the hands of L.B. Poly in the CIF finals. The Golden Knights who lost a close one, 6-3, to Loyola before an overflow crowd in La Canada last season will lose leading rusher Max Garrison (1,793 rushing yards), but return 6’ 6” senior quarterback Jack Jacobs (1,927 passing yards (65%), 533 rushing yards). Three of Jacobs’ top four receiving targets will graduate, but junior Preston Jernegan is a tough player. When these two arch rivals meet on the gridiron, the hitting is hard and the sparks fly. A lot could be on the line for both teams in this blockbuster league finale to be played at Smith Field.
