LOYOLA CAPTURES CIF STATE SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA DIV. I REGIONAL SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP
Undaunted by driving rain and the impressive skill of its opponent, Loyola won its third CIF State Southern California Division I Regional soccer championship on Saturday as junior AIDAN CUEVAS scored a golden goal in the first overtime period off a long throw-in by DIEGO AVILA to defeat San Clemente, 2-1, on the Tritons' home pitch. It was a tautly contested match from beginning to end. Avila scored the Cubs' first goal in the 25th minute, but San Clemente scored before halftime to draw even. The match remained tied through regulation before the dramatic game winning goal by Cuevas. It was Cuevas's 34th of his career, setting the school record for goals scored. Loyola proved it is one of the top teams not only in California, but in the nation as well. Undefeated in Mission league play, head coach CHRIS WALTERS' Cubs ended the season with an overall record of 25-3-6. Sixteen of the roster's 22 players will return for the 2018-2019 campaign.
