Your 90% win rate is lying to you

The smooth equity curve is the bait. Here's the math nobody shows you.

Hey,

I want to talk about the trade that feels the safest and is quietly the most dangerous: selling options premium.

Here's the uncomfortable truth. You can win nine out of ten trades selling premium and still lose money. It's not bad luck. It's the structure. When you sell premium, you're the insurance company — you collect a small, capped amount today in exchange for promising to cover a large loss later. Your revenue is small and frequent. Your claim is rare and huge.

So your brain records a long streak of green days and calls it skill. What's really happening is you're being paid scraps to stand in front of a rare, violent loss. Frequency is what you feel. Severity is what kills you.

And the losses don't arrive politely one at a time. They cluster. In a crash, the price gaps, implied volatility explodes, and every short position you hold loses at once. February 5th, 2018 — Volmageddon — wiped out a popular short-vol product by roughly 90% overnight. Two years of "safe" premium, gone in hours.

The cruelest part: the strategy punishes its own success. The longer nothing bad happens, the more confident you get, the bigger you size. So the eventual loss lands on your largest-ever position. The market doesn't blow up the cautious seller. It blows up the one who got comfortable.

None of this means premium selling is bad. Being the insurer is a real, durable edge. The problem is always the size and the story.

What a disciplined trader does: size for the worst day you can imagine, not the average one. Assume a gap straight through your strikes and ask, "Do I survive that?" If the honest answer is no, you're too big — full stop. Keep your size flat even on a winning streak, define your risk, and spend a little premium on far-out-of-the-money tail protection.

Survival first, edge second.
