Here's a number that should bother you more than it does.
A trader who's right 60% of the time will still hit five losses in a row about once every hundred trades. Trade daily and you'll see that several times a year. Six, seven in a row — not black swans, just Tuesdays.
So the streak isn't a risk. It's a scheduled event. The only open question is how much of your account is riding on it when it shows up.
I used to think blow-ups were an accuracy problem — that a better setup or a higher win rate would fix everything. The coin test broke that for me. Take a coin that lands heads 55% of the time, pay even money, bet 40% of your stack each flip. Genuine edge, and you still go broke. The edge didn't save you. The size killed you.
The reason is asymmetry. Lose 10% and you need 11% back — fine. Lose 50% and you need 100% just to break even. Lose 80% and you need 400%. Big losses don't just cost money; they raise the bar for every trade after. That's risk of ruin, and it depends far more on bet size than on win rate. Size is the lever. Accuracy is just the knob.
What a disciplined trader does: decide the dollar loss before entry — say 1% of the account — then let that number set the position size. Not "how many contracts can I afford." Backwards from risk. Maybe that's one contract. Maybe it's zero and you pass. On a $5,000 account, 1% is fifty dollars of risk, and the size falls out of the distance to your stop.
The quiet bonus: when no single trade can hurt you, you actually keep your rules. You take the stop instead of moving it. Correct sizing is what makes discipline physically possible.
