Here's the uncomfortable thing about "the trend is your friend": almost nobody who repeats it can tell you the math that makes it true — or the conditions where it quietly turns on you.

Strip the poetry and the claim is precise: returns have positive autocorrelation over some horizon. And the horizon is everything.

• 3 to 12 months: momentum is one of the most documented edges in finance — stocks, commodities, currencies, bonds, over a century of data. Real.
• 1 to 5 days: returns often flip to slightly negative autocorrelation. An up day tends to invite a pullback.
• 3 to 5 years: mean reversion. The biggest winners underperform as valuations snap back.

Same market. Trending, choppy, and reverting all at once — you just pick the lens.

Why does the medium-term edge exist? Information diffuses slowly, humans anchor then overreact, and systematic flows mechanically buy calm markets that grind higher. But that last one is a trap: volatility-targeting buys on the way up and is forced to sell on the way down. That's why trends don't die of old age — they die in a couple of brutal sessions. The edge is strongest in the middle of a move, when doubt still exists. It's weakest at the extremes where the slogan is screaming loudest at you.

What a disciplined trader does with this: match the tool to the timeframe, treat volatility as the master switch, and size positions so the inevitable violent reversal is survivable. Before leaning on any trend, glance at what options are pricing — cheap vol and calm skew mean the feedback loop is intact; rising vol and steepening skew are your early warning the regime is shifting.
