Right on direction, down $1,700

The earnings trade that wins the direction and still loses money.

Here's a trade that stings more than a normal loss, because the trader was right.

Stock at $100, earnings after the close. He buys ten 105 calls at $3 each, $3,000 total. Strong quarter, he figures, stock rips. The print hits, it's a beat, and the stock gaps to $106 the next morning. Plus 6%, exactly his direction.

And the position closes down $1,700.

Here's the mechanism. Before the print, implied volatility on those options was swollen, maybe 80%, because the market knew a big unknown number was coming. The moment results hit the tape, the unknown became known, and IV collapsed back toward 35% almost instantly. That's IV crush. All the premium he paid for a shot at the fireworks got deflated, because the fireworks already went off.

The call that cost $3 was worth about $1.30 after. Ten contracts, $1,300 back on $3,000 paid.

The core insight is this: he didn't buy a bet on direction. He bought a bet that the move would be bigger than the move already priced in. His breakeven was $108, an 8% move. The market had already priced roughly 8%. A 6% gap felt like a win. To that position, it was a loss. The direction was free. The volatility was not.

What a disciplined trader does: check the expected move first, every time. Ask one blunt question before you touch a contract: do I believe the real move will be bigger than what's priced, yes or no? If it isn't a confident yes, a long single-leg option is the wrong tool. If you still want the directional view, a call spread sells a higher strike to claw back inflated premium so the crush nets out far smaller.

And it travels. Fed days, jobs reports, drug readouts, 0DTE into a big print. Before any known event you're not betting on what happens. You're betting on what happens versus what's already priced.
