Right on direction, down $1,080

The 0DTE trade that got the read right and still bled out from theta.

Here's a trade worth sitting with.

A trader buys ten SPY 513 calls at 1.20 — $1,200, zero days to expiration. His read: morning dip held, grind higher into the afternoon. Two hours later SPY is higher. The direction was right. The position is down $700.

The thesis never failed. The clock did.

The core insight: at entry, with SPY at 512.60 and the strike at 513, that call was 100% extrinsic — pure time value. Break-even wasn't 513, it was 514.20. He thought he needed SPY to go up. He actually needed SPY above 514.20 by 4 p.m. Completely different bet.

And the trade didn't die at the close. It died at 1 p.m., in the green. SPY was at 513.40, above his strike, and the call was already trading at 0.95, not 1.20. The move added intrinsic; expiration-day theta stripped off more. On 0DTE you're not paid for being right about direction — you're paid for being right about distance and speed. Standing still is a loss.

By 3:45 SPY slipped back below the strike and the calls went to 0.12. He closed for $120 and ate a $1,080 loss on a read that was correct all day.

What a disciplined trader does: attach two stops before the order fills. A hard P&L stop (say minus 40%) that doesn't care whether you're "right" — it would've exited near $950 instead of $120. And a time stop almost nobody uses: if the thesis hasn't paid by, say, 1 p.m., you're out regardless of price. That one rule turns this from down a thousand into roughly flat. Same read, opposite outcome, entirely because of when he left.

This transfers anywhere the premium is mostly extrinsic — weeklies into Friday, earnings lottos, far OTM calls. Before your next entry, find the extrinsic portion of the price and say it out loud.

The handle: on 0DTE, you're not long direction, you're short time — and time doesn't take days off.
