The Way Parrots Sleep

I’ve lived in Miami for all my life and have seen parrots for most of it. Parrot Jungle, a miniature zoo for birds that later became Jungle Island, featured plenty of macaws hungry for seeds. There are also parrots that love the trees in our backyard.
In all this time, however, I’ve never seen a parrot lying down to sleep. I had always assumed that they would sleep standing up, like other birds. And I had assumed that when going to Central Park Zoo with some family during a New York trip, I wouldn’t be seeing parrots. I was wrong on both counts.
In a tropical aviary, brimming with birds and spring heat, a parrot napped on a branch. I looked up, curious. It was a blue macaw, chilling and snoozing. How did I know? The bird’s eyes were closed. Little breaths puffed its feathers in and out as it lay on the wood.
Finding out there were things I could learn about birds at home while being in another state reminded me how big the world is. A little bit of knowledge can change a person’s perspective. We definitely need that change as the world enters more turmoil.
