Sustaining Joys

The baby nephew turned two this month. His dad made him a buttermilk vanilla cake with sour cream chocolate frosting. I made a gluten-free chocolate chip cake with standard chocolate buttercream. He got to have a taste of both frostings while his dad and I were decorating. His mom said he woke up early the next morning and was saying “yum” about his samples.
Thus far, baby nephew hasn’t learned that things being stirred in the kitchen mean potential dessert for him. When he does, he’ll probably be unstoppable. And I’m looking forward to it.
Finding joy this year has been hard. Morale’s low, over a million people are dead thanks to certain geniuses in office and the people who voted them in, and we don’t know which creator or organization will betray their followers.
Baby nephew has provided consistent joy. He’s grown so much over the past few years: memorizing books from hearing them, repeating words fairly well, and making up new games to play. Baby niece has grown so much too, and I’ll provide updates on her when I see her next.
They both remind me why the joy matters. So that I can fight to make sure they have a better future.
