Homemade Christmas Spirit

Handmade light green Christmas tree made out of tissue paper. There is also blue, white and purple tissue paper integrated into the whole.

Happy Christmas, everyone! I made a Christmas tree this year using cardstock, lots of tissue paper, pipecleaners, and plenty of Tacky glue. Taking notes on what to improve next year.

Why not a real tree? For one, I did a lot of shopping for presents so my budget was low, even for an artificial tree. And for another, it likely would have been vetoed. We haven’t had a real tree since once was gifted to us in the 1990s. And for a third? We’d have to do regular maintenance to keep the tree from drying up early.

Making this tree required cutting up tissue paper, crumpling it, and gluing it to the tree. It was actually cathartic to do the crumpling and see it add up to a nice whole. I stopped worrying about a potential kitsch aspect.

Next year may be different if I can find a collapsible miniature tree that won’t get lost in house clutter. A temporary decoration for Christmas Day with presents can make all the difference for morale. It reminds us to create when it seems we have nothing.
