Changes and Editing News

Life is full of changes. The old veggie burger place ten minutes away is now a One Piece restaurant. I visited it today and bought a boba soda. (Really delicious, by the way.)
Also, one big announcement: I'm going to guest-edit the next issue of Translunar Travelers Lounge! Submissions are open for writers of color, and general submissions will open next Friday. Being on the other side of the editing desk will be interesting. I also hope to gain more experience to see what makes a narrative owrk.
Editing can be subjective. Yet ideally, the final drafts will fit a preconceived image and unified theme. It also requires constant learning.
For example, different magazines set out varying guidelines for the writers. This is an anecdote cut from an article I wrote for Superjump:
Real-life pest control can be interesting. The game reminded me of the time that my mom ordered a couch, and there were bees inside that got loose in the kitchen. My older brother and sister shooed them out, and ever since then, we've had bees in the yard. As a result, we have very happy flowers.
To this day, we don't know how they got in and why they took refuge in the couch. I don't even know what we would have told customer service: "Our couch came with extra bees?" You could put that story in an entry for the game, and it wouldn't seem out of place.
So I like this story, which is completely true, and I wanted to keep it. The editors pointed out it's not an anecdote about the game, which is about customer service when homes are plagued by magical creatures. I cut the story from the final article.
