Your Decemeber Oliviary: undersea volcanoes and heritage apples

Just enough time left in December to squeak in one last newsletter! The coming year is going to be a doozy, so let’s all grab some rest and relaxation while we can.

Linkery

  • “The Scientist Who Decodes the Songs of Undersea Volcanoes.” Plus the seismic impact of Taylor Swift concerts! I love everything about this.

  • An apple hunter’s incredible search for heritage apple varieties, many of which you can buy to plant in your garden.

  • From favorite active blog The Loose Cravat: I’ve been around romance for several lifetimes, but I still somehow missed that there was once a whole Love Train ferrying authors to a convention across the country.

  • Once upon a time I was a college student in an all-girls’ dorm swapping romances with my friend Hilary — who has now helped gather this marvelous list of books by BIPOC scientists, for furthering inclusivity in STEM!

  • “Signs of Ghosts” — a longread on cities, Covid, loss, memory, and community.

  • Much less serious: this profile of the actress who plays Flo in the ads for Progressive is a wonderful, chaotic, incredible piece of writing.

Crafty

Dalan Hargrave carved a mermaid into a piece of topaz and it’s one of the most beautiful gems I’ve ever seen.

Reading recs

The December column and the year’s best romances are both up! My only regrets are that I am only a single human who cannot read literally everything, ever, and I am continually thankful that so many talented people are working in the romance space and constantly blowing my socks off as a reader.

May all the lights burn brilliantly for you until next time!
