Successful A/B tests, nbQA and PyDataGlobal's CfP
Working with a client recently we started to talk about A/B tests and using ML to direct marketing campaigns. We had a suspicion that their tests might have been underpowered - so perhaps they weren’t detecting successful A/B campaign variants due to weak signal and small sample sizes.
I wrote a monte carlo simulator to try both random data models (generating random sequences where you know the True/False rates) and using an estimator formula. It is pretty sobering to try to get a 90% power rate (so 9/10 tests where a difference exists will be detected) - the required sample size is often much larger than you’d like.
I liked Practical guide to controlled experiments on the web: listen to your customers not the HiPPO. The section on hypothesis testing and sample sizes is great, it lists 3 ways to reduce variance which can decrease your required sample size for an effective test. Worth a read (and yes, it is from 2007 - timeless). Do you have a related resource to share?
In this case the scenario is to rerun new trials using fewer experiments, larger populations and to get a better statistical power to determine which campaigns can actually be learned from. This video on Is Most Published Research Wrong has great visuals on true positive, false positive and false negative rates which are easy to follow for non-data scientists.
PyDataGlobal 2021 returns this October, the Call for Proposals is open and runs for just 3 weeks. First time submissions are eagerly requested along with those from long-time community members. Get your thinking cap on!
Marco Gorelli (long-time PyData community member and Pandas core contributor) shared his tool nbQA which lets you “run any standard Python code quality tool on a Jupyter Notebook”. The animated demo shows it running flake8, mypy, diff and more on a Notebook. It looks good!
Marco says “for (almost) the past year, I’ve been working on nbQA, a tool to run Python scripts (e.g. black
, isort
, flake8
, etc…, but also any local script) on Jupyter Notebooks. It robustly handles Jupyter magics by parsing them with IPython’s TransformerManager, Python’s ast module, and the tokenize-rt package. It’s used by several open source projects (see the README for some examples) as part of their CI processes. Contributions are welcome!”
Do you have a tool to share?
