Jupyter graphical debugger, a bug in line_profiler, a new timeseries forecaster
Jupyter graphical debugger, a bug in line_profiler, a new timeseries forecaster
Did you now that Kindred are looking for a Lead Data Scientist along with quants and python developers? Details are below along with other Senior roles in 12 job adverts.
One thing I teach in my Higher Performance Python class is using line_profiler
in a Notebook to figure out what’s slow in a cell (it runs at the cmd line too). Just recently this stopped working, thankfully a bug was reported and a PR is on the way. There’s a simple patch you can apply if this affects you before the PR gets released (it is due to updates in Jupyter and how filenames were being reported which changed the parsing needs for external tools).
Talking of changes in Jupyter - I just ran into a bug in the current Jupyter Lab where breakpoint()
no longer starts pdb
(but the older import pdb; pdb.set_trace()
works just fine). I posted the bug and it is both confirmed and the suggestion back is to try the new Jupyter Labs graphical debugger which should replace breakpoint()
for general usage. The new debugger looks pretty, I’m a bit torn on whether adding more complexity to Labs is the right move and will happily explore.
Isaac Godfried shared a link for a general purpose time series deep learning library that he’s co-author of: “Flow Forecast is a multi-purpose open-source deep learning for time series forecasting, classification, and anomaly detection framework built in PyTorch. Flow Forecast utilizes modular code design, unit/integration tests, model/prediction visualizations, and native cloud provider integration in order to allow researchers to rapidly experiment with new model architectures, benchmark their results on popular datasets and reproduce their results. Simultaneously it aids industry data scientists to deploy models to production, periodically retrain models, and explain model decisions to stakeholders.”
Do you have a library (or educational post?) to share here? Reply to this email and I’ll happily take a look.
On the 9th & 14th of September there’s an I Am Remarkable ally-friendly event aimed to “Improve your motivation and self-promotion skills, Change social perceptions and refresh the conversation around self-promotion, Increase self-confidence, Learn about the importance of allyship and how to be a better ally in the workplace and beyond”. It is organised by Camila Kuhn and the event is free. I’m not involved, I mention it as it sounds like a nice initiative.
A few issues back I spoke about my A/B testing Notebook. I wanted to get that running on MyBinder so that others could easily one-click run it in the browser without checking out the code and building an environment. It turns out that amounted to copying the URL into MyBinder, then adding the link it built into my A/B test README on a badge and…it just works. If you’ve not used Binder, go click the icon on my README, wait 2 minutes and then fiddle with the code. I think that’s pretty cool.
Tickets for PyDataGlobal 2021 (Oct 28-30, all online) are available. I’m hoping to organise a special event for early purchasers and I’m also re-running my “executives at PyData” session during the conference to help senior-level folk share problems (hiring? retention? communication? derisking?) and find solutions. I hope to see you at the conference.
See recent issues of this newsletter for a dive back in time.

Data Engineer/Scientist - Beatchain
Beatchain is a music distribution and social media marketing and analytics platform that works with up-and-coming artists as well as established record labels. We are looking for a data engineer/scientist working in Python to help users manage, understand and put their data into context. Data sources include social media and music platforms scraped over hundreds of thousands of accounts using Scrapy, APIs including over two million Spotify playlists, and large quantities of streaming data from our distribution and record label partners.
