Expanding

I feel like I’m constantly testing my limits and capacity at the moment. How many things I can hold in my head, my understanding of people, of nature, of gratitude. I’m expanding my capacity to make quiet spaces within myself and facilitate that in others; of how to practice hope and love and letting go.

What are all the ways you can expand?
In what ways are you expanding right now?

This is an image of a person - fairly gender neutral - with long hair, sitting in what looks to be a space ship looking out at a massive moon in front of them with a violin and bow hanging in the air.

I love stories that are about loads of things all smushed together & the Growing Moon is about what you have left at the end of the world.

This is a black woman on a green background. Her head is uncomfortably close to the floor and she's looking up at the camera in a way that looks like she knows she's being observed in an uncomfortable situation but also a bit like "so look at me then". She's pushing up against the floor as if she's going to do a push up but her arms are at an angle where it wouldn't be effective. Her cornrows trail onto the floor and have coloured beads at the end of each one.

I wrote this story because I was angry at a competition that cited itself as inclusive but named the characters you had to use. They chose the most stereotypical white people names. I wanted to change that in the first line and take a stab at explaining what else may exist in that space between name and perception.

My Most Recent 5* Read

The cover of cry voidbringer which is mainly the title in a harsh but rounded font but the O in void is large and has black seeping out of it into the white background.

This just came out and I accidentally bought two copies. But also this book took a hammer to my heart so many times I’m surprised I survived it. Suffice to say, it was a wonderful experience.

Creative Spotlight

a light green to blue gradient background with a collage of images and photos and text. An illustration of a wizard with bob-length orange hair and blue starry robes with knee-high bright pink socks lays across the top, next to the dark blue large header text that reads "Hello, it's me". In a pink cloud shape is dark text that reads "Ella T. Holmes. She/her or they/them". A brown sign post sits in the middle of the image, pointing left to "Facts" and right to "follow me". On the left a green box of dark text lists the following: fiction writer, essayist, thought-haver, disability advocate, artist, shrek fan, s-cargo lover. To the right, two dark blue boxes of white text read: On most socials @ellatholmes. YouTube and substack "Ella has thoughts".

Ella is also the editor of Artifice and Access, the disability in fantasy anthology that came out earlier this year. Disability is often left out of fantasy, or as Ella puts it, depicted by the three D’s Dead, Dreadful and Dangerous.

This collection puts a middle finger to that conception, adding layers to fairy tales and imagining new ones with morals at their core that are sustaining and transformative.
