Welcome to this latest edition of Ceredigion Nature News.

Happy Summer Solstice! At this time of year, there are many opportunities to observe and engage with the natural world around us.  Whether you’re reading as an individual or with your family; as a volunteer or professional; representing a group, a community or an organisation, we hope the items we have included this month will give you lots of inspiration and chances to explore and enjoy nature in Ceredigion and beyond.

On a technical note, recognising that these newsletters can be quite long and perhaps not every item interests every reader, we are introducing hyperlinks to facilitate navigating through the various sections.

Contents

We begin this edition with an announcement about Local Places for Nature Funding but there are other funding opportunities throughout the following sections.  There’s a section on Mammals including a blog about Beavers, Water Vole findings, a Bank Vole course, a webinar on detection dogs, Otter monitoring training and courses about Bats. The section on Birds includes a talk on Grey Partridge, news of Swift Awareness Week, news of a bird song identification app and Young Conservationists’ Bursaries.  Next up we have four Competitions followed by the Trees section with items on everything from free hazelnut seeds to a tree nursery open day, a Tree Growers Directory, a warning about diseases in sweet chestnuts, a webinar on Ash Dieback and Tree Health Pilot Grant, news about Nature Networks, plus links to and webinars on other woodland grants and a job running a Woodland TV channel!  News this month includes the Green and Blue Infrastructure Strategy for Ceredigion, a river pollution fine, flood risk projects and a coastal erosion mapping tool and peatland restoration at lake Vyrnwy.  There are walks by night and day, two bio-blitz, three festivals and numerous activities, courses and conferences.  There are volunteering opportunities in for young people, gardeners and land workers in our Help Wanted section and NRW are offering several student work placements. Please assist our members by completing the surveys and questionnaires here.  Also there are two exciting opportunities to take part in biological recording.  Last but not least we have news of how you can take part in Wales Nature Week this July with the theme Celebrating Nature’s Treasures.

Happy reading!

Local Places for Nature Packages and Funding

Ceredigion Local Nature Partnership has been allocated capital funding by Welsh Government’s Local Places for Nature Scheme to engage communities in the creation, restoration or enhancement of ‘natural assets’ for the benefit of wildlife.    This will enable us to partner with organisations and community groups working in deprived areas and with communities who lack access to nature such as elderly and disabled people or other under-served groups.  We are focusing on food growing, tree planting, wildflowers and pollinators, but if you have an idea for a bespoke project, or for more information about the scheme, please contact Rachel Auckland on biodiversity@ceredigion.gov.uk
