Ceredigion Nature Newsflash 19/09/26
How has the drought affected Ceredigion?
We’re looking for photographs that show how serious the drought has been in Ceredigion and across Wales this year, and how it is affecting our local area.
Have you captured images of:
- Low water levels in rivers, streams, reservoirs or ponds?
- Dry fields, parched land or struggling crops?
- Effects on wildlife, livestock or local habitats?
- Changes to the countryside, gardens or community spaces?
- Any other signs of the drought’s impact?
We’d love to see what you’ve noticed. Your photos could help build a picture of how the drought is affecting our communities and environment.

Ceredigion Barn Owl Project
Help protect barn owls in Ceredigion by reporting sightings, possible nest sites or suitable locations for nest boxes. The project initially focuses on Cross Inn and Caerwedros, combining nest boxes with habitat restoration.
West Wales Wild Watch - September
Free wildlife recording sessions with West Wales Biodiversity Information Centre. A great way to discover the local wildlife.

Plant Y Coed
Aimed at young people aged 10–15 to encourage children to spend time outdoors and develop a lasting love of nature. Starting Wednesday 16th September – £60 for 6 × 2-hour sessions.
Discoveries After Dark
Explore online how insects connect us to nature and discover more about the fascinating world of nocturnal wildlife. Thursday 24th September 1–2pm.
Biodiversity Shorts
A series of one-hour live webinars exploring natural history topics = £10.
- Waxcap Identification for Beginners – Learn to recognise common waxcap species and understand their ecological importance. Thursday 24th September 7–8pm.
- Mythical Menageries – Explore the creatures and stories of medieval manuscripts. Monday 5th October 7–8pm.
Community Apple Juicing
Take your apples and 1–2 clean bottles to make juice with help from Lampeter Permaculture Group. Saturday 26th September 10am–12.30pm at Lampeter Market.
Harvest Festival
Autumn crafts and activities. Soup and rolls provided. Donations of food and clothing for local charities are welcome. Saturday 26th September 11am–2pm Newcastle Emlyn. See attached.
Seed Gathering Season
Hear from community tree nurseries online about growing trees from seed and bringing people together through local tree-growing projects. Thursday 1st October 1–2pm.
The Peat Café
A monthly online series at 1pm exploring peatlands through archaeology, ecology, heritage, climate and community perspectives. See attached.

Peatland Restoration Grant
Grants of £10,000–£250,000 to support peatland restoration projects in Wales. Applications close Monday 30th November.
Webinars explaining the application process will be held on Teams on Tuesday 6th October.
Happiness Fund
Grants of £5,000 to grassroots, not-for-profit community organisations supporting projects that improve mental health, wellbeing, inclusion and skills development. Closing date: Friday 2nd October.

Discovering Marine Ecology
Explore marine ecosystems, coastal habitats and the relationship between humans and the sea, with a focus on UK species and habitats. Wednesday 23rd September–Wednesday 4th November 1–1.45pm = £40.
Lifelong Learning
A range of short courses in ecology, conservation and science, open to everyone. Courses starting in September and October.
Jobs and Volunteering
Borth Community Hub
Support the café and Nature Hub activities, with opportunities available most days of the week.
- Café Volunteers – Help in the café area, with roles lasting between 2 and 4 hours.
- Nature Discovery Walk Leaders – Lead Wednesday walks, leaving the Nature Hub at 10.30am and lasting around 1½ hours.
- Specialist Speakers and Walk Leaders – Share knowledge through short talks or walks on seasonal topics such as orchids, butterflies and migratory birds.
