Pausing Wednesday, mandatory SafeSport
Pausing Wednesday classes
We’re pausing the Wednesday classes for now, our beginner students have successfully joined the Tuesday and Thursday classes. We may open them back up if needed.
Coach Jack will be leading training for our competitive fencers Tuesday–Friday, 4:30–5:30.
Join in open bouting toward the end of Tuesday and Thursday classes to fence with our new fencers and our competitive teens.
SafeSport training now required for all adults
USA Fencing is now requiring all adults who “are a member age 18 or older who has regular contact with athletes under 18.” to take the SafeSport training. We are figuring this is applies to everyone in the club given the number of youth fencers.
The initial online training is about 90 minutes, the refresher each year takes about 30. You can take training through your USA Fencing dashboard.
The full body of their email is below:
USA Fencing works alongside the U.S. Center for SafeSport to help young athletes feel safe and supported.
We encourage every member to explore the FenceSafe website and familiarize yourself with the FenceSafe Handbook, the USA Fencing MAAPP, our Minor Athlete Abuse Prevention Policies, and the SafeSport Code. Together they spell out the rights and responsibilities of the U.S. Center for SafeSport, USA Fencing and everyone within our membership.
The U.S. Center for SafeSport requires all Adult Participants to complete annual SafeSport Training. The Center also offers optional sessions for parents, coaches, athletes (minor and adult) and administrators on a range of topics in abuse awareness and prevention.
Training for parents and minor athletes is also available. This link provides parents and minor athletes access to training courses regarding the prevention and reporting of child abuse.
What's new
You are required to complete annual SafeSport training through USA Fencing if you are a member age 18 or older who has regular contact with athletes under 18.
Regular contact means interacting with one or more minor athletes six or more times in any 12-month period, in person or online. Practices, private lessons, competitions, team travel and club events all count.
In practical terms, this applies to coaches, referees, club owners and staff, chaperones, team volunteers, tournament officials and adult athletes who regularly train or compete alongside minors at a club.
If your fencing brings you into no regular contact with minor athletes, this requirement does not apply to you. If you are unsure, complete the training.
Members who have not completed the training will be unable to register for upcoming events, beginning with the October North American Cup in Orlando. If you plan to compete, coach or officiate this season, complete your training now so your registration isn't held up.
Training takes about 90 minutes the first year and roughly 30 minutes for the annual refresher. You can access it through your USA Fencing member dashboard.
