Michael Kora - Montavilla Entrepreneur of the Year 2017!
When I stepped into Daugherty's Auto Service garage for the first time, it felt as if someone left the building 25 years ago and locked the keys inside. While that is nearly true, a great challenge was right in front of us: repurposing a neglected, neighborhood eyesore into a useful gathering place for beer lovers.
Long before any drawings were on paper and before city permitting began, I spent a lot of time imagining what this space could contain. It seemed like a tape measure was my new best friend and the task of waiting was my biggest obstacle. With under 1550 square feet to work with, planning and space delegation was crucial to the functionality of the brewery and the comfort of taproom patrons.
4 months of architectural planning (insert big learning curve here), 4 months of city permitting hassles (which have since turned into legendary bar stories) and 9 months of construction (even more bar stories): that's what it took to bring Montavilla's first brewery to life. I had a blast putting the brewery together and am grateful to see the many happy faces that come to share a beer with us every week. Thank you!
