Mezzogiorno.Arts — Winter/Spring 2024
Hello all! Scroll down for an in-person pizzica meet up in San Francisco on March 2nd, a weekly dance along every Tuesday, and a couple of videos.
Dance, Drum, Discuss :: A pizzica meet-up in San Francisco on March 2nd
What to expect
Join us at Lines Dance Center for an in-person event that Monica will be facilitating. This is not a workshop/class — rather it is a gathering of interested people with a variety of experiences who want to learn more, and perhaps work on related projects together. The plan is to go over the basics, dance together, watch videos for inspiration, and train our eyes and ears to see differences in styles — and then of course to dance some more. I will also be sharing a short reading passage with people ahead of time that we can discuss to keep our work contextualized.
Specifically:
We will learn some basic pizzica steps and do a lot of dancing.
We can drum a bit if people are up for it.
We'll watch some videos and get inspired.
We'll discuss a passage from a book or article.
We'll think about our place in this art form.
We'll dance some more!
This is a bit of an experiment - not quite a class (but we will all learn), not quite a salon (but we will all think and chat), not quite a festa (but we will all have a meaningful blast).
Note that though I am a decades long dancer and teacher in another style, I very purposely use the term facilitator for this work! I have vast an varied learning experiences around pizzica and related forms, but am a learner and social practitioner myself.
Spoiler alert: Part of my larger thinking is that we can nurture a scene where pros will want to come teach us knowing there is interest!
People of all experience levels are welcome. Folk dance, after all, is done, learned, and taught by folks.
Note: We need at least 5 to 7 people to make this happen. We need YOU! If we don't get enough people this time we will try again in a few months.
Sliding Scale $0 to $20.
Please register by February 17th if you know you are coming
Weekly Zoom Dance Party
We continue to meet every Tuesday on Zoom at 6PM for a quick warm-up and then a dance to a pizzica song. Drop in anytime. It's low key and a way to keep up (or start) your skills in a chill virtual ronda!
Click the pic above for all the details, and see you on Zoom on Tuesday!
Video
Dancer Veronica Calati is such an expressive dancer, and shines in this solo pizzica piece.
I have a few go-to videos on you tube, and this is one of them. I recommend most things on their account, and hope to one day hang out where many of these videos were filmed!
