Web Monetization / 15 Years Without Tracking
Dear Mojeek community,
Thanks for signing up to the Mojeek Newsletter. This month we decided to feature the story of Marc our founder and his fight for search independence, plus a new micropayments initiative that we have joined.
We will use this newsletter to keep you up-to-date on developments at Mojeek. Also, where appropriate, we’ll cover stories and comment about the wider world of search, surveillance, privacy, and liberation from the claws of Big Tech.
Our newsletter will be sent no more than once a month; if we come across a month where sending you an email would be tantamount to cluttering up your inbox, we’ll skip it. Anyway, here’s the meat of our first one...
Web Monetization
In 2020, we were approached by Coil and asked if we wanted to leverage Web Monetization the proposed W3C standard for streaming payments, in order to allow people with a Coil subscription to stream payments to us via their browser. This new, emerging model for funding the Web complies with our our demanding requirements when it comes to the preservation of user privacy. We were thus interested and happy to try it out on Mojeek. Read more about Web Monetization on our blog.
To Track, or Not to Track? 15 Years Striving for Search Engine Independence
In case you missed it, we recently published an article looking back on 15 years since our first public statement that we were not tracking the people using Mojeek. The inciting incident for this decision might surprise you. Read more on our blog.
Thanks for reading...
If you think that someone else might benefit from learning about a growing crawler-index search engine that’s providing a true alternative to Big Tech, why not forward them this email?
