🔴 Two in custody as police issue statement following Tesco car park incident
Good morning. Normal service has resumed at the Tesco in Ramsey, including the car park, after a rather eventful afternoon yesterday.
Around this time yesterday, police responded to reports of a man having been assaulted in the vicinity of the Bowring Road store. The response included both uniformed officers and the constabulary's firearms unit.
The victim of the assault was taken to hospital for treatment. Thankfully, his injuries are not considered life-threatening.
Following the incident, two individuals were taken into custody. It's understood they were apprehended on a bus.
The police have stated they consider this an isolated incident and have assured the public that there will be an ongoing police presence in Ramsey today, both to continue the investigation and to offer reassurance to residents.
If you have any information related to this incident, the police are asking that you contact them directly on 631212. Alternatively, you can provide information anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Manx Radio · Manx Radio · Manx Radio · Manx Radio

Ramsey to host three international culinary stars this Valentine's weekend
Douglas's Millennium Bridge will be temporarily out of commission this week for some essential maintenance. The Department of Infrastructure has announced that the bridge, specifically the stretch between Parade Street/Double Corner roundabout and South Quay roundabout, will be closed to both vehicles and pedestrians each night from 8pm to 6am, starting Monday, February 9th, and continuing until no later than 6am on Friday, February 13th.
This closure is to allow for the replacement and refurbishment of the bridge's hydraulic cylinders. These cylinders are crucial for the bridge's lifting mechanism and, after 25 years of service since the bridge's opening in 1999, require attention.
The DOI has been tackling this project in stages. Last February, one of the original cylinders was replaced with a new unit made by the original engineers in the Netherlands. The removed cylinder was then shipped off for a full refurbishment. This week, the second original cylinder will be swapped out for the refurbished one. The DOI plans to send the second original cylinder to the Netherlands for its own refurbishment, and then keep it here on the Island as a spare, just in case of future breakdowns or routine maintenance needs.
During the overnight closures, drivers will need to use an alternative route via Lord Street, Bridge Road, and South Quay. The DOI has scheduled the work at night to minimise disruption to commuters and businesses in the city centre.
The harbour will also be affected. Access for vessels to the inner harbour will be restricted during the maintenance. Mariners are advised to consult the Notice to Mariners issued by the Harbours Division, which is available online.
The work is a joint effort by the Department of Infrastructure’s Highway Services and Harbours Divisions, with support from local crane and haulage contractors. Manx Radio · 3FM · 3FM · IOM Today

'My childhood memories of the Isle of Man's grim but wonderful Aquadrome'
Good morning. For those of you involved with Manx charities that operate internationally, the Financial Services Authority is holding a drop-in session next week that you might find useful.
It's all about proposed changes to the way the Island counters the financing of terrorism, specifically as it relates to non-profit organisations. There's a new definition being proposed for what's called a "Specified Non-Profit Organisation," or SNPO, and a draft SNPO Code for 2026 is in the works.
The FSA is keen to help charities understand what these changes might mean for them. They'll have officers on hand to explain the impact of the proposed updates and answer any questions you might have. They're also offering support, including a dedicated contact person, free training, and even template documents to help with compliance.
Dylan Pycroft, a Manager in the Authority’s AML/CFT Supervision Division, emphasizes that the goal is to help charities understand their obligations and reduce risk, without hindering the important charitable work they do.
The drop-in session is scheduled for Wednesday, February 11th, 2026, from 4pm to 7pm at the Promenade Methodist Church in Douglas. If you're interested in attending, you can email Dylan Pycroft directly at dylan.pycroft@iomfsa.im. It sounds like a good opportunity to get clarity on these upcoming changes. Manx Radio · IOM Today

Castletown Commissioners mark 130th anniversary of Poulsom Park
Poulsom Park Celebrates 130 Years with Tree Planting Ceremony
Castletown Commissioners this week marked the 130th anniversary of Poulsom Park with a commemorative tree planting. The park's existence is owed to the generosity of Mary Poulsom, who gifted the land to the town in June of 1896. As a token of their gratitude at the time, the Commissioners presented Miss Poulsom with a gold key.
To celebrate the milestone, two red oak trees were planted in the park. Lieutenant Governor Sir John Lorimer and Lady Lorimer each planted one of the oaks, with assistance from pupils from Victoria Road Primary School.
In total, the Commissioners planted ten trees to mark the occasion. Further celebrations are planned for later in the year, with a community event in the works to properly commemorate the park's long history. Manx Radio

Consultation open on plans to formally recognise the heritage of Douglas Head
Consultation Underway on Douglas Head Conservation Area
The Cabinet Office has launched a public consultation regarding the proposed designation of Douglas Head as a conservation area. This follows an earlier consultation in 2021, where a significant 77% of respondents voiced their support for such a move.
The government's stated aim is to formally acknowledge and protect the area's unique heritage, distinctive architectural character, and valuable natural environment. Designating Douglas Head as a conservation area would introduce a framework for managing future development and changes in a way that preserves its historic character.
According to Minister for the Cabinet Office David Ashford, this initiative represents a proactive step towards safeguarding Douglas Head for future generations. The consultation aims to gather public feedback and establish clear guidelines for managing change, supporting quality development while preventing the erosion of the area's historical significance.
The current consultation will play a crucial role in shaping the final Conservation Area Order. Following the consultation period, the Cabinet Office will publish the final order, accompanied by a map delineating the boundaries of the proposed conservation area. This order will then be presented to Tynwald for approval before it can come into effect.
For those interested in participating, the consultation document is available online. Alternatively, paper copies or alternative formats can be requested by contacting planningpolicy@gov.im or calling 01624 686758. Manx Radio
Fundraiser to keep St John Ambulance emergency fleet on the road
St John Ambulance Launches "Adopt an Ambulance" Fundraising Drive
St John Ambulance Isle of Man has announced a new fundraising initiative aimed at shoring up the financial resources needed to maintain their fleet of emergency vehicles. The "Adopt an Ambulance" scheme is a direct response to the increasing costs associated with keeping these vital vehicles operational.
As many know, St John Ambulance provides essential services across the Island, from providing first aid at public events to offering patient transport and frontline emergency support. The charity emphasises that dependable vehicles are absolutely critical for their volunteers to respond swiftly and safely when someone needs assistance.
The "Adopt an Ambulance" scheme invites both local businesses and individual donors to contribute through various sponsorship options. According to John Gill, Knight Commander at St John Ambulance Isle of Man, these vehicles are essential to supporting the community at events across the Island. He stated that by "Adopting an Ambulance," donors directly ensure that St John has the necessary tools to save lives when needed.
Caitlin Bradley, Head of Fundraising, expressed enthusiasm for the new scheme, highlighting that it offers donors a tangible connection to the organisation's work. She noted that it's a chance for people to witness their generosity translate directly into miles covered and life-saving care delivered within the community. While all donations are appreciated, this scheme aims to foster a closer relationship between St John Ambulance and its supporters.

Data breach impact rises sharply as cyber incidents affect thousands on Isle of Man
Good morning. The latest figures from the Isle of Man Information Commissioner (ICO) paint a somewhat concerning picture regarding data security here on the Island. While the number of reported data breaches actually decreased during the third quarter of the 2025/26 financial year (that's July to September), the impact of those breaches has risen dramatically.
The ICO recorded 39 personal data breaches during that period, down from 52 in the previous quarter. However, a staggering 12,000 individuals were affected by these breaches. To put that in perspective, only around 2,200 people were affected in the second quarter, and just 800 in the first. So, fewer incidents, but each one affecting a much larger number of people.
While the proportion of breaches classified as "high risk" dipped slightly from 42% to 36%, a worrying 28% were assessed as carrying a risk of identity theft or fraud.
On a positive note, organisations are generally getting quicker at reporting these incidents. 92% of breaches were notified to the ICO within the required 72-hour timeframe, an improvement from 82% in the previous quarter. Remember, organisations are legally obliged to report breaches within that timeframe, unless they are unlikely to pose a risk to individuals.
Looking at who is reporting these breaches, the public sector accounted for 54% of reports in the third quarter, with the private sector responsible for the remaining 46%. This is a slight shift from the previous quarter, which saw a more even split. During the same period, the ICO closed 49 personal data breach cases.
Zooming out to the full calendar year of 2025, a total of 186 personal data breaches were reported, up from 154 in 2024. Around a third of these involved "high risk" special category data – that's sensitive information like health details, political opinions, religious beliefs, trade union membership, or sexual orientation. For the year as a whole, the private sector accounted for 56% of reported breaches.
The ICO is reminding everyone of the importance of staff training, robust cybersecurity measures, and well-rehearsed incident response plans. They also stress the need for clear and timely communication with individuals affected by a breach.
Senior Compliance Officer Laura Doyle highlighted that the increase in affected individuals during the third quarter was "largely driven by cyber security incidents - mainly phishing attacks - targeting large-scale organisations." She added, "It’s extra important to stay alert for ‘phishers’ during busier times. But cyber incidents can happen to any organisation - it’s often not a matter of ‘if’ but 'when'". So, vigilance is key, both for organisations and individuals. Manx Radio

Heritage campaigner's awareness leads to 'red flagging system' at Amazon
Heritage Campaigner's Discovery Prompts Amazon to Implement "Red Flagging System"
A local heritage advocate has successfully prompted Amazon to take action against the sale of AI-generated books containing misinformation about the Isle of Man.
Last September, Charles Guard became aware of several travel guides being offered for sale on the online retail giant's website that purported to be about the Island. Upon closer inspection, these booklets were found to be AI-generated and contained photographs that were completely unrelated to the Isle of Man.
Concerned about the potential for misleading information being disseminated, Mr. Guard contacted Alex Mayer, the Member of Parliament for Dunstable and Leighton Buzzard, the location of one of Amazon's primary distribution centres.
Ms. Mayer subsequently wrote to Amazon regarding the matter. As a result of her intervention, Amazon has removed the offending books from its site. More significantly, the company has also implemented a "red flagging system" designed to identify and prevent the sale of similar misleading or inaccurate publications in the future.
Mr. Guard has expressed his satisfaction with Amazon's response and the implementation of this new system. Manx Radio
Island residents can see Mars in Peel from today
Red Planet Lands in Peel: Giant Mars Model on Display
Those of us on the Island with an interest in the cosmos, or just a fondness for impressive art installations, have a treat in store. Starting today, a large-scale model of Mars is on display at Cathedral Isle of Man in Peel.
The artwork, created by the artist Luke Jerram, promises a fascinating glimpse of our rusty neighbour. It follows the popular display of Jerram's moon model last year, which drew a remarkable 18,000 visitors to the west of the Island.
The Mars installation will be in place until 2 March, giving ample opportunity to plan a visit. According to Lay Minister Rosemary Clarke, the Cathedral is planning a series of events around the display, and they are keen to welcome visitors from across the Island.
For those eager to be among the first to see it, the Mars model is open to the public from 9:00 am until 6:30 pm today. Manx Radio
Roundhouse cafe employment tribunal adjourned
Roundhouse Cafe Tribunal Halted Due to Company Dissolution
An employment tribunal case involving Francesco Romagnosi and Caffee Roundhouse Limited has been put on hold. The hearing revealed that the cafe's parent company was dissolved back in November of last year.
Peter Taylor, who chaired the tribunal, noted that while the company owners had previously submitted information to the tribunal in September, they failed to mention their plans to dissolve the business.
As a result of this development, Mr. Taylor has adjourned the proceedings. The case will remain on hold until Caffee Roundhouse Limited is officially restored as an active company, allowing them to properly participate in the tribunal. The full details of the tribunal's decision are publicly available for review. 3FM
When was the state of Tromode Road looked at?
Tromode Road Traffic Under Scrutiny in House of Keys
The ever-present topic of traffic flow is set to be discussed in the House of Keys this week, with a focus on Tromode Road. John Wanneburgh, MHK for Douglas North, has formally submitted a question to Tim Crookall, the Minister for Infrastructure, regarding the current state of the road.
Mr. Wanneburgh's query specifically addresses whether the ongoing roadworks on Braddan Road, near Braddan Primary School, have contributed to increased traffic congestion on Tromode Road. Many residents will no doubt be interested in the Minister's response, given the potential knock-on effects of roadworks in one area impacting traffic patterns elsewhere.
The matter is scheduled to be raised during the House of Keys sitting, which commences at 10:00 am on Tuesday, February 10th, at the Legislative Buildings in Douglas. We'll be following the proceedings and will bring you updates as they become available. 3FM
Part of Raad Ny Foillan to close for over a month
Good morning. A heads-up for those of you who enjoy a stroll along the Raad ny Foillan, particularly the section that follows the old railway line in Michael. The Department of Infrastructure has announced that a portion of the coastal path will be closed for just over a month, starting this coming Monday, February 9th, 2026.
The closure affects the stretch between Orrisdale North and Orrisdale South junctions. The DoI advises that this is to allow for essential maintenance work on a former railway bridge, as well as some resurfacing of the path itself. The work is expected to take approximately five weeks to complete, so plan your walks accordingly. 3FM
Bid to make boating lake a winter bird haven
Each year, Ramsey's Mooragh Lake undergoes a draining process for maintenance and litter removal. This involves seawater flowing in and out via the sluice gate with the tides. This year, however, that process will be extended as part of a trial aimed at creating a winter haven for birds.
The Manx Wildlife Trust notes that the resulting shallow water and exposed mud create a prime feeding ground, already attracting several bird species. The Mooragh Lake, a 12-acre boating lake, has been a feature of the northern park since 1881. The park itself is owned by Ramsey Commissioners and currently leased to Mooragh Lake Water Sports.
This conservation trial is a collaboration between the leaseholders and the Manx Wildlife Trust. The goal is to assess whether the lake can serve as a winter bird sanctuary without disrupting its use as a leisure facility.
Typically, the lake remains drained from early January to mid-February. However, for the 2026 season, the refilling will be delayed until Easter. The trial will monitor bird activity to gauge the lake's potential as a winter habitat.
Already, birds like oystercatchers, redshanks, ringed plovers, little egrets, herring gulls, and black-headed gulls have been observed feeding in the lake – all species of concern to conservationists.
David Bellamy of the Manx Wildlife Trust says it's encouraging to see how quickly the birds have responded to the altered conditions. A single count revealed 130 oystercatchers, a species on the red list. He noted that within hours of the water level dropping, waders and gulls were feeding on the exposed mud.
The Trust emphasizes the importance of muddy habitats for wintering birds, and how even small, well-timed changes can benefit wildlife without impacting public enjoyment of the park.
The Island has few areas of shallow water and intertidal mud, which are vital feeding habitats for waders and other waterbirds. While coastal sites like Derbyhaven Bay, Cornaa, and some working harbours still offer these conditions, similar habitats in Douglas, Ramsey, and Peel have been lost to development.
If the trial proves successful, an ongoing scheme could be incorporated into Ramsey Commissioners' Mooragh Park Master Plan.
Ramsey Commissioner Juan McGuinness describes the trial as a "straightforward" way to "gather evidence before any longer-term decisions are taken," given that the lake is drained annually anyway. BBC IoM
Why has it taken so long to demolish dilapidated hotel?
Demolition work is now underway at the former Castletown Golf Links Hotel on Langness, a structure that has been steadily deteriorating since its closure back in 2007. The reason cited for the sudden activity is "safety grounds," which, given the building's condition, isn't entirely surprising.
For those with longer memories, the hotel, boasting 58 bedrooms and various dining areas, was once considered an integral part of the Castletown Golf Links experience, drawing visitors to the Island with its function rooms, spa, sauna, and even a solarium. The golf links themselves date back to the 1890s, though the hotel likely appeared sometime in the early to mid-20th century.
The story of its decline is a bit convoluted. After the hotel closed its doors, the Castletown Golf Links was divided. Langness Golf Club Ltd acquired the golf course in late 2011, while developers Dandara purchased the hotel property the following year.
In 2017, Dandara unveiled ambitious plans for a multimillion-pound redevelopment, including a 40-bedroom hotel, a spa complex, a swimming pool, and 40 apartments. However, the planning application faced significant opposition and was ultimately rejected four years later, with concerns raised about the location, its impact on the landscape and wildlife, and potential light and noise pollution.
Dandara appealed the decision, leading to a four-day public inquiry in February 2023. The appeal was subsequently refused later that year, sealing the fate of the existing structure.
A report from Malew Commissioners in 2023 highlighted the building's descent into dilapidation, noting issues with rodent infestations, criminal damage, and anti-social behaviour. Locals have frequently described it as an "eyesore," and it was generally agreed during the appeal process that demolition was the only viable option. The local authority even considered issuing a demolition order before the emergency demolition order was issued.
Currently, Fort Island Road is closed until March 2nd to facilitate the demolition works.
In a related development last year, Dandara sold 60 acres of land on the Langness Peninsula to Manx Birdlife. This area, designated as a site of special scientific interest, encompasses grassland, coastal heath, and saltmarsh, and is home to around 200 bird species, as well as the only lesser mottled grasshoppers in the British Isles. Manx Birdlife intends to manage the land for nature conservation "in perpetuity," conducting bird surveys and collaborating with landowners.
As part of that sale, the land where the former Castletown Golf Links hotel stands has been acquired by Langness Golf Club Ltd, who, it's worth noting, have expressed interest in constructing a new luxury hotel on the site. So, while one chapter closes, another may be about to begin. BBC IoM
AI Technology can 'lighten load on Manx speakers'
A computer science student is hoping to give the Manx language a boost with a new AI tool. Chris Bartley, at Sheffield University, has been working on a machine-learning model designed to transcribe Manx Gaelic.
Beyond simple transcription, Bartley envisions the technology serving as an educational aid, helping learners with pronunciation. He also points out that it could enable screen readers to make Manx accessible to visually impaired individuals – a group currently largely excluded from written Manx.
Bartley told the BBC that he believes limited resources can lead to the marginalisation of Manx Gaelic. He hopes that speech recognition and text-to-speech technologies can bolster ongoing language revival efforts. His aim is to ease the burden on native speakers, freeing them up for other vital tasks.
The 2021 Census recorded approximately 2,200 Manx speakers. Since then, efforts have continued to encourage more people to learn and use the language.
Bartley hopes his technology can complement existing initiatives, such as Culture Vannin's annual project where a native speaker transcribes old recordings. This is a time-consuming task, and Bartley believes his tool could significantly increase productivity, allowing the individual to focus on other areas like teaching or course development. He stresses that the technology is intended to augment, not replace, the work of the Manx-speaking community.
The accuracy of the tool's pronunciation hinges on the quality of the data it's fed. Bartley emphasises the importance of using "good Manx" to ensure accurate results.
He also highlights the importance of text-to-speech functionality for visually impaired individuals, opening up access to Manx beyond spoken sessions.
Bartley, who began learning Manx in 2023, has already informed Culture Vannin about his project and hopes to make it available online in the future. BBC IoM
New ferry's Liverpool link priority for passengers
Passenger Survey Highlights Liverpool Link as Key Priority for New Ferry
The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company is currently in the planning stages for a new ferry, slated to replace the Manannan by 2030. As part of this process, they recently conducted a week-long survey to gather public opinion on what passengers would like to see in the new vessel.
More than 4,500 people participated, and while the Steam Packet says it's too early for definitive conclusions, some clear priorities have emerged. The most prominent of these is maintaining reliable, year-round service, particularly to Liverpool. The current Manannan operates daily sailings to the government-funded Prince's Half-Tide Dock in Liverpool between March and October, with occasional seasonal trips to Dublin and Belfast.
Survey respondents also emphasized the importance of journey times, with many expressing a desire to maintain the current schedule of two daily return trips to Liverpool during the summer months. This suggests that speed remains a significant factor for passengers.
The Steam Packet spokesman noted the "huge volume of feedback" received, highlighting the vital role ferry services play in island life. While the majority of respondents were Isle of Man residents, around 30% were based elsewhere, including TT visitors and marshals, friends and relatives of residents, and business travellers.
The Steam Packet has committed to publishing a full summary of the survey results once they have been thoroughly analysed. This will provide a more detailed understanding of passenger needs and preferences as the planning process for the new ferry progresses. BBC IoM

Emergency services at scene as car crashes into garden wall
Good morning. The Department of Health and Social Care is currently undertaking a public survey to inform the next Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment, or PNA, for the Isle of Man. If you're a resident, patient, carer, or service user, your input is encouraged.
The survey aims to gather feedback on both community and hospital pharmaceutical services across the Island. Government officials say the insights gleaned from this process will be used to update the PNA, ensuring that future service planning and pharmacy services are based on a solid understanding of the Island's current and emerging needs. The last PNA was published in 2019, so an update is due.
The survey specifically explores the availability, accessibility, and quality of pharmacy services. Health and Social Care Minister Claire Christian has stated that the goal is to ensure the new PNA genuinely reflects the needs of the community by listening to the experiences and expectations of patients and carers. She emphasized the importance of strengthening transparency and ensuring community perspectives are fully reflected to support the development of high-quality pharmaceutical services for the future.
If you prefer to submit written comments instead of completing the survey, you can email them to StrategyandPolicy.DHSC@gov.im. Alternatively, you can post them to Strategy and Policy, Department of Health and Social Care, Head Office, 1st Floor Belgravia House, Circular Road, Douglas, IM1 1AE.
