Business groups welcome personal allowance increase but concerned over cost of government
Good morning, Isle of Man. In yesterday's budget announcement, the government revealed a personal allowance increase, a welcome move for local business groups. The Chamber of Commerce and the Local Economy Forum have expressed their support for this measure, citing its potential to boost consumer spending and stimulate the local economy. However, both organisations have also expressed concern over the rising cost of government, which they believe may have a negative impact on business competitiveness. The Chamber of Commerce has called for a more balanced approach to budgeting, one that takes into account the needs of both the public sector and the private sector. The Local Economy Forum has echoed these sentiments, urging the government to prioritise economic growth and job creation in its future budget decisions.

MLP: Claims that there is no money don't 'stack up'
A lively debate has erupted in the Manx Parliament regarding the recent Income Tax increase, with the Liberal Vannin Party suggesting that the uplift could have been implemented in a more measured way. The party argues that the full 2% rise could be phased in over a longer period to mitigate the impact on local residents. This approach, known as a 'taper', would allow the island's finances to benefit from the increased revenue while easing the burden on individuals and businesses. The proposal is set to be discussed in more detail in the coming weeks. The Liberal Vannin Party's stance highlights the ongoing efforts to balance the island's budget and ensure the financial well-being of its people.

Exceptional Demand Met by Outstanding Ambulance Service Team
Manx Care’s Ambulance Service successfully responded to what is believed to be the busiest day in its history yesterday (Tuesday 17 February 2026), both in terms of the number of incidents and the complexity of cases handled. Across the day, the Emergency Services Joint Control Room logged 82 incidents, coordinating the deployment of resources and providing vital information to support decision-making and system planning in real time. Emergency ambulance crews delivered face-to-face care to well over 70 patients, responding to a wide range of needs from critical, life‑threatening emergencies to complex but less urgent presentations, while maintaining a consistently high standard of care. The clinical navigator team triaged more than 20 calls, with the majority safely managed at a lower priority or referred directly to alternative services. This played a crucial role in ensuring that the most seriously unwell patients received a timely response. In addition, welfare call-backs, supported by the Joint Control Room team, helped keep patients safe while awaiting further assistance. Behind the scenes, the Operational Support Team worked tirelessly to keep the ambulance fleet operational. Despite mechanical challenges, they ensured vehicles were available when and where they were needed most. Will Bellamy, Divisional Director for Ambulance and Transfer Services, said: 'This was an exceptional day in every sense, and I could not be prouder of our teams. From call handlers and clinical navigators to ambulance crews, operational support and command staff, everyone worked together under sustained pressure to ensure patients received safe, timely and compassionate care. It truly demonstrated the professionalism, resilience and commitment of our service.' Throughout the day, command teams managed significant system pressures, high incident demand and multi-agency coordination, addressing issues as they arose and maintaining service resilience. Responding to an exceptional day

Companies reminded to ensure Beneficial Ownership details are accurate and up to date before 27 February 2026
The Isle of Man Central Registry is reminding all Isle of Man companies of their obligation to ensure their Beneficial Ownership details are accurate and up to date by 27 February 2026 to avoid enforcement action. The Central Registry has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the integrity, accuracy, and completeness of the Isle of Man’s Beneficial Ownership Database — a critical tool in supporting corporate transparency, preventing financial crime, and meeting international regulatory standards All Isle of Man companies are required to appoint a Nominated Officer, who is responsible for ensuring that any changes to a company’s beneficial ownership are promptly reported to the Central Registry. Nominated Officers must also make an annual declaration confirming that the information held on the Beneficial Ownership Database remains accurate and up to date. The Registry recently completed an outreach programme targeting companies and Nominated Officers who were in default with their submissions or annual declarations. The Registry extends its sincere thanks to all entities that responded and took action to remedy their outstanding obligations. Companies that remain in default will receive further contact next month. Those that continue to fail to update their Beneficial Ownership information risk enforcement action, including civil penalties or the company being struck off the Register. Registrar General, Edward Clague said: ‘While the Registry saw an encouraging response to our outreach, a number of companies unfortunately remain in default. As a result, we intend to commence more formal actions next month against all companies that continue to be non‑compliant. For anyone who is unsure about their obligations, please contact the Registry as soon as possible. We are very happy to assist any company or Nominated Officer who may be unclear about their responsibilities, and we will work with you to resolve outstanding matters and restore companies to good standing.’

Budget 2026: Stability, Security and Confidence
Treasury Minister Chris Thomas MHK emphasised financial discipline and investment in services alongside a substantial rise in the personal allowance while unveiling his first Budget in Tynwald this morning (Tuesday 17 February). Referring to this year’s Budget slogan, Minister Thomas said: ‘It is a privilege to stand in this Honourable Court today to present to the people we represent the 2026 Isle of Man Budget and five-year financial plan — a budget and plan for Stability, Security and Confidence. ‘This financial plan sets a pathway towards reducing the Island’s reliance on general reserves despite a continuing need for significant public expenditure.’ Monthly scrutiny panels and the forthcoming introduction of priority-based budgeting were highlighted as ways of maintaining stability and driving greater efficiency in Government spending into the future. Setting Departmental pay and non-pay budgets below inflation expectations is expected to deliver results more immediately. ‘I estimate that this means £5.6m of savings will be achieved [in 2026-27] and £29m over the medium term if there is adherence to the plan,’ the Treasury Minister informed Members. While Government spending continues to rely on the use of reserves to fund spending, this is forecast to diminish over the next five years, with a surplus forecast from 2028-29 onwards. Despite their planned use, the Island’s reserves are forecast to grow from £1.95 billion in the coming financial year to £2.22 billion in 2030-31. The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) will receive an additional £45m, driven by demand for services delivered by Manx Care and increasing the DHSC annual budget to £412m. This rise marks the first departure from the funding formula set out following the Independent Review of the Isle of Man Health and Social Care System, leading Minister Thomas to warn: ‘Healthcare is important but the sustained and substantial increase in costs in recent years remains a significant risk to
