🔴 Keys questions range from assisted dying to offshore wind
A busy day is in store for members of the House of Keys as they tackle a lengthy agenda, dominated by the complex Justice and Home Affairs Reform Bill. However, before delving into the bill's intricacies, the morning will begin with a question session, featuring 13 inquiries from various MHKs. Arbory, Castletown and Malew's Jason Moorhouse has submitted five questions, while Ramsey's Lawrie Hooper has posed four. A notable coincidence has arisen, with two MHKs, Tim Glover and Julie Edge, inadvertently submitting identical questions regarding the Assisted Dying Bill 2023. This duplicate inquiry will be presented to Chief Minister Alfred Cannan, with both members taking turns to ask the question. Other topics up for discussion include the promotion of political awareness in schools, which will be directed at the Education Minister.

Manx Care says it is 'doing a lot of work' to tackle concerns raised by doctors
A recent survey of British Medical Association members has sparked a renewed focus on addressing concerns within the island's healthcare system. The results, which showed that fewer than one in four doctors would recommend Manx Care as a place to work, have been described by the union as a scathing critique. However, Dr Chris Stockport, Executive Medical Director at Manx Care, emphasizes that the organization is actively working to tackle these issues, albeit with a recognition that meaningful change takes time. One key development aimed at improving the work environment is the establishment of the Manx Care Professional Senate, which was formally endorsed by the Manx Care Board in November 2025. This initiative seeks to address the desire among colleagues to feel more valued, heard, and informed about developments in their work areas. While the introduction of the senate has been welcomed, the British Medical Association has expressed concerns that such changes may not yield swift enough results for its members.

Meet the Matrons at 'conversation cafés'
As the healthcare landscape continues to evolve, Manx Care is taking a significant step towards fostering a stronger connection with the community. In anticipation of launching its Experience and Involvement Strategy, the organisation is hosting a series of informal gatherings, dubbed 'conversation cafés', where members of the public can engage with the matrons from Noble's Hospital. This initiative marks a key milestone in Manx Care's three-year commitment to enhancing its relationships with patients, carers, families, and staff across the island. The reintroduction of the matron role at Noble's Hospital last year has laid the groundwork for this strategy, which builds upon existing patient experience initiatives and community engagement efforts. By facilitating open discussions, Manx Care aims to deepen its understanding of the needs and concerns of those who rely on its services. A trio of 'conversation cafés' has been scheduled, with two of these sessions taking place at Costa Coffee shops.

Medicinal cannabis survey to understand shifts in society, says Public Health
As the Isle of Man continues to navigate the evolving landscape of medicinal cannabis, Public Health has launched a comprehensive survey to gauge the Island's shifting attitudes and habits. The initiative seeks to establish a robust research foundation, particularly in light of recent revisions to cannabis prescription laws. By examining the use of medicinal cannabis, as well as alcohol and illicit substances, Public Health aims to gain a deeper understanding of the Island's societal trends. To ensure frank and honest responses, the survey is entirely anonymous, and residents are being encouraged to participate freely. In a recent discussion with Manx Radio, Director of Public Health Dr. Matt Tyrer elaborated on the survey's objectives and importance.

Jurby Commissioners to consult residents on mobile library service
As the island's communities continue to weigh the importance of various services, Jurby Commissioners are seeking input from residents on the future of a valuable resource. The Manx Family Centre's mobile library, which visits the parish on specific days, has requested continued support from the local authority. To inform their decision, the commissioners need to gauge the level of interest and usage among residents. The mobile library, now operated by the independent charity Manx Family Community Association, was previously at risk of closure in July 2025. Following successful fundraising efforts, the service has been maintained, but its continuation relies on sufficient community engagement. The charity has indicated that an annual cost of £500 would be justified if enough people are using the service.

'We just want Ethan home'
A heartwarming campaign is underway to support a local family's efforts to bring their beloved son back home after an extended period of hospitalization. Ethan Dunne, a 27-year-old father, has been bravely managing his diabetes since the age of 14, but a severe hypoglycaemic brain injury in September 2024 drastically altered his life. For the past 18 months, Ethan has been receiving care in various medical facilities, including Nobles Hospital, the Sid Watkins Rehabilitation Centre in Liverpool, and most recently, Derby House Neurology Care Home. Meanwhile, his devoted mother, Jo, has been residing in a campervan in the UK since February 2025, ensuring she remains close to her son throughout his treatment. Inspired by the story of another family's similar experience, Jo decided to bring the campervan to the UK to be nearer to Ethan. As the family prepares for Ethan's eventual return home, they are now seeking the community's help to make necessary modifications to their house.

Dates for offshore windfarm scrutiny meetings announced
Islanders will soon have the opportunity to weigh in on a proposed offshore wind farm, as the dates for a series of scrutiny meetings have been revealed. The project, known as Mooir Vannin, involves the construction of 87 wind turbines off the east coast of the Island by energy company Ørsted. An independent examining body will be reviewing the application, and the public is invited to participate in the process. The first meeting, which will outline the procedure for the examination, is set to take place on March 3 at 10am at Woodbourne House in Douglas. Those wishing to attend must register by February 24. A public meeting will follow at 4pm on the same day, also at Woodbourne House.

Some residents in Onchan without power
A disruption to the power supply is currently affecting certain households in Onchan, with properties on Laurel Avenue, Ashley Hill, and Maple Avenue being impacted. According to Manx Utilities, the cause of the outage is attributed to damage inflicted by a third party. While the exact timeframe for resolving the issue remains uncertain, a team of engineers has been dispatched to the site and is actively working to reinstate the power supply as soon as possible.

January's inflation rate stays the same
Island residents will note that the cost of living has remained steady, with the latest figures showing no change in the inflation rate from the previous month. According to the Consumer Prices Index, the annual rate of inflation stands at 3.3 percent. A closer look at the data reveals that certain sectors have experienced more significant price hikes. Notably, the cost of dining out or staying in hotels has increased by 7.4 percent over the past year. Other areas with notable price rises include communication services, which have gone up by 5.2 percent, and education, with a 5.8 percent increase. Some of the most substantial price jumps were seen in domestic help, which has risen by 17.6 percent, and coffee and other hot drinks, with a 10.3 percent increase.

Child benefit payments delayed due to technical issue
A technical glitch has thrown a wrench into the usual schedule for child benefit payments, which were slated for distribution today. Fortunately, the issue has been identified and rectified, but not before it affected a sizable number of transactions - 781, to be exact. As a result, recipients can now expect to see the payments land in their bank accounts tomorrow, a day later than anticipated. The Treasury has extended its apologies to those impacted by the delay, and for anyone with pressing questions or concerns, the Social Security Division is available to field calls at 685656 or respond to emails sent to childbenefit@gov.im.

New elective surgical unit will be 'nice controlled environment'
Island patients awaiting elective surgery can now look forward to a more streamlined experience, thanks to the recent unveiling of a dedicated unit at Noble's Hospital. The newly refurbished Ward 7 has been made possible in part by the efforts of the Manx Breast Cancer Support Group, and is designed to provide a calm and controlled environment for those undergoing planned procedures. By guaranteeing a bed will be available for patients who require an overnight stay, hospital staff aim to alleviate some of the uncertainty and anxiety that can come with surgery. A visit to the new facility revealed a thoughtfully designed space, with Ward Manager Lauren Whittaker and Senior Matron David Neilan on hand to discuss the benefits and features of the new unit.

Manx dancer, teacher and festival organiser 'in awe' at RBV win
Island stalwart Juan Garrett has been bestowed a prestigious honour for his tireless dedication to promoting Manx culture. With a career spanning over four decades, Garrett's impact on the local dance scene has been profound, earning him the esteemed Reih Bleeaney Vanannan award. As a dancer, teacher, and driving force behind the Shennaghys Jiu Celtic festival, Garrett's influence extends far beyond his own accomplishments, with his legacy continuing to inspire new generations. The award, considered the island's highest cultural accolade, is presented by Culture Vannin and determined by a panel of representatives from various cultural organisations. In a heartfelt response to receiving the award, Garrett deflected attention from himself, instead acknowledging the individuals who have shaped his own journey in Manx culture. Garrett's recognition was marked with a private ceremony at Ramsey Town Hall, where he was presented with a medal and £500 in prize money.

Children's play area at Castletown bowling green to remain closed
A popular spot for families in Castletown will remain out of bounds for the time being, as the children's play area at the bowling green is still undergoing essential refurbishments. Despite initial hopes of reopening last summer, the project has been delayed due to a review that revealed the allocated budget was insufficient. Castletown Commissioners have since ordered additional play equipment, including new swings, to enhance the redeveloped area. The goal is now to complete the works and open the park to the public by this summer. To ensure the project stays on track, the commissioners have allocated extra funds in this year's budget and brought in professional expertise to oversee the scheme. While the delay has been frustrating, the commissioners have reassured the community that the project remains a top priority, and they are committed to delivering a revamped play area that meets the needs of local families.

MNFU calls for ability to trade with UK to be made a priority
Island farmers are facing significant challenges due to a recent shift in the UK's Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy status, which has led to a change in how Manx livestock is processed. The Manx National Farmers Union has expressed concerns that this alteration is having a profound impact on the local agriculture sector, with some farmers experiencing a substantial drop in the value of their livestock - in some cases, as much as 30 percent. According to the MNFU's general secretary, Sarah Comish, the inability to have Manx cattle processed in UK abattoirs is a major issue that needs to be addressed. Comish is advocating for the Island's government to prioritize negotiations that would allow Manx farmers to continue trading with the UK. This sentiment is shared by Ean Parsons, who has also been discussing the matter with local media outlets. The Environment, Food and Agriculture Minister, Clare Barber, has acknowledged the need for improved communication between her department and UK authorities.
