Thinking Inside and Outside the Box Newsletter 007 August 10, 2024

Our psychedelic jug band, The Remotes, will be playing a 30 minute set on Sunday, August 18. For those of you local, come see us at one of the quirkiest street fairs in town.
JOURNALING

I reread a classic book on productivity, called Getting Things Done (GTD). This is my 3rd time through the book since the 2001 publication date. It was last revised a few years ago. The system has aged well, and I still use most of the concepts to help keep all of my tasks, appointments, and responsibilities straight. A detailed writeup of my personal GTD journey, along with a couple of examples from my system, are shown here. I use mostly analogue tools, but the techniques are easily adapted to digital tools.
CAT STATUES

Recently, a statue of a cat showed up in the park near our house. This is part of a fundraiser for a local children’s hospital (the statues will eventually be auctioned off) and there are 30+ of them scattered around the central city.
I’ve only found two of them so far in my usual travels. See them here. As I find more, I’ll share them with you.
PNW PEN SHOW

I recently attended a two day trade show featuring pens (mostly fountain pens), ink, journaling supplies, and a gaggle of like minded people. In addition to checking out all of the exhibits, I helped staff our local club’s table and also spent a couple of hours as a volunteer for the show organizers. Photo essay here.
BOOKS
Understanding Comics is an excellent book that describes the history and art of comics, in the format of a comic book. It’s been many years since I read this, and I had forgotten most of it. If you’ve read this far, you might enjoy it.
Pushing Ice is an excellent space opera set within an imaginative sci-fi world. Recommended if you enjoy world building, with a solid reverence for scientific principles.
(MORE) VISUALS

Regular subscribers might remember the piece that I wrote recently describing Zentangles, which are just a form of doodling on paper.
Since then, I realize that I may have created an original one! Step by step instructions are here.
WRAPPING UP
A recent subscriber suggested that I create a QR code for a link to this newsletter. It is easier for me to share the link with new people that might be interested, and you can share it too!
