A Short Handbook for Public Scholars
Modern Medieval
by David M. Perry and Matthew Gabriele
In 2013, a pope retired, and I started writing op-eds. Now I’m pleased to announce a new book coming next year: A Short Handbook for Public Scholars.
The announcement:
There are lots of people talking about why public engagement by scholars is necessary, maybe even essential. I have just signed a contract with Johns Hopkins University Press to write A Short Handbook for Public Scholars. Expected Summer 2026, this book will be a pragmatic guide for scholars - construed broadly as anyone at all whose writing is informed by deep learning. This is a book about the “how.” I'll talk about how to pitch and craft essays, how to work with editors and engage with the general public, protect yourself from harassment, and expand into all kinds of media, genres, and types of scholarship.

Who is "I" here? (With a little clicking, we can figure it out, but it's a little odd right below your two names.)
