Mike Oct '21 - Half Edge is back :)

Hey friends,

Gonna keep this first one short and sweet*, as I've had a manic couple of weeks in London and think I'm maybe getting sick for the second time this month.. As these things go on I might experiment with the form a bit, tell you more about what I've been up to, reading, writing, listening etc.

*sorry, I tried

This is coming to you from a reply address so if you'd like, please do hit me back, I'd love to hear what you're up to, anything you've been reading or listening to I might like, or if you're finding these mailouts too long, short, boring, or generally awful, I'd like to hear that too. Please also excuse me while I figure out even the basics of good design (and how the embed function works in this thing) - hoping these will start to look better as time goes on..

It might not seem like a big deal, but I've been really so grateful to see you all signing up to this thing. The last few weeks have fully confirmed my suspicion that getting off socials (I still have a facebook account but kicked that habit a while ago) was a big necessary step for me to more enjoyable and healthy ways of relating in the world, and I think I'd reached a point where I was ready to accept that either way. But to feel like I could do it without also accepting total social oblivion, I wasn't expecting - my heart is full!

I've got some news -

Half Edge with Nick Kagame - 19th November

It's been two and a half years since the last do with our Bruce and while I hesitated throughout the long wave of deferred reopening dates, since stepping back into the club I've had machinations of reprising the old party. If you didn't know the deal, it's pretty simple: 1 guest at a time (mates only - who needs touring DJs??), big long-form loose b2b vibes in an intimate setting. My biggest inspiration when dreaming up these parties back in the day was always _meandyou. and I am beyond stoked that we'll be doing these at Soup going fwd

I've been a big big fan of the way Nick plays tunes for a while, he's got this effortlessly elegant flow where restrained funky rhythms are allowed to roll and the slightest changes are full of impact - like Leif or Margaret Dygas channeling the spirits of UK funky and garage. I have a definite tendency towards the frenetic and chaotic, but it's a style I'm quite envious of and often try to work on at home, so let's see how I manage to keep up! Think this might also bring out my lesser spotted sweet side :)

Half Edge Tapes 001

Sliiiightly reticent in announcing this, as I managed to blow up my mixer and so it's getting a little close to the bone with getting these pressed up in time, but I've got a double-pack mixtape planned to celebrate the event. They're shaping up quite different to how I see the night panning out, blending the ethereal with the excruciating.

One tape for the dance-floor: straight up anarcho-hardcore anti-club music, wormhole freetekno tunnelling upwards to the inhuman transcendence of jungle. All time favourite records going into this one, the ones I've only ever played at home.

One for the after after party. Circuit melting four deck concréte blends (I told you I blew up my mixer), with broken electronics carrying haunted remnants of c12th plainsong, and free jazz decomposing into brain addled folk.

Will be a straight to tape affair, but if you're keen and don't fuck with archaic formats, give us a shout and I'll get you a private link. I'll have some cheaper copies on the night or if you want one hit me up here - m8s r8s for you lovely lot.

Rainy City 08/10

I had the flu earlier this month, so I beamed out this slow burner from my bedroom. Lots of weightless gloopy new age stuff in the first hour, easing into some tripped out downtempo stuff. Rly enjoyed it in the end, out to Rainy City for having me :)

Gonna play these things by ear. Some will be shorter, some maybe even a bit bloggy - let us know what you're liking and not liking, as I say very much a work in progress, and I'd love to hear what you think.

Hopefully see u all v soon!

All love

Mike xx
