Some pottery, if you're into that

The initial confession, with links to my new shop, and some inspiration for the current collection of pottery.

Three mugs in a row, the center one inverted, foot ring in the air. They say 'do trans, be crime' in a hand written inlay lettering. They are all black clay, mostly exposed on the outside with a grooved texture that wraps around and slightly inward-sloping walls. The top and inside are glazed white/grey with organic brown patches and subtle specks of blue.
Late-summer pride mugs, in black and white

Hi friends,

This is the first outing (confession?) of Mia Culpa. I’m really glad you’re here, and I have no idea what I’m doing.

I guess I could apologize for that. I do appreciate a good apology. Showing concern for our impact on each other seems Good. I even like hiding apologies inside gratitude. Thanks for your patience. Thank you for understanding. Thanks for subscribing to this email.

Here’s some pottery: art.MiriamSuzanne.com

(along with my novel, art prints, and a few Teacup Gorilla albums if you’re into legacy media)

And a discount code: MIASCULPA

I’m new to selling physical things online, so let me know if you run into issues. Thanks for understanding!

Inspirations for this collection

My friends at the 20th Street Rec Center and Kinship Studio (where I now also teach) have been extremely helpful and inspiring. Thank you all! Here are some other bits of relevant inspiration for the pieces you see…

T-shirt ideas. Trans ones include a basic "helvetica and" style spelling out the colors of the flag. Also, the Trans Am idea from above, a transistor component symbol and a flag with words instead of colors. Asexual ideas follow the same formats with helvetica and the flag. Also, a very simple circle design and an ace of hearts design using just the A and the heart.
The original “monochrome pride” concept art

Heydon Pickering shared some t-shirt designs online for a “Monochrome Pride” shop he’s putting together. I thought their white-on-black pride flags would go well with my “do trans, be crimes” design – so I reached out about a concept-swap, and they agreed. I’ll let you know when their shop goes live! In the meantime, check out some of their other projects.

A mug with no handle – it has a tall inset foot-ring, then quickly expands to a sharply angled base and slopes gently in towards the lip at the top. The body is organic matte browns – maybe wood or soda fired – with a lot of texture: carved rings near the base, indentations from handling, marks from a fishnet, and a slight folded-over ridge before the final stretch to the lip.
Might not be the original mug, might not be a mug at all

This textured beauty has been my long-time favorite. I didn’t make it, but I did drink my coffee out of it this morning. The makers mark on the base says “Hersh” or something like that. When I think of a nice mug, this is the shape I think of. My style is different, but this inspired my inset-foot and inward-sloped form.

It might be the mug that my high school writing teacher gave me. More likely, it’s the mug that I got as a replacement, after breaking the original. Either way, it carries those memories of early encouragement.

Some potters seem to distinguish between a “mug” with a handle and a “tumbler” or “cup” without. Is that a real distinction? Merriam Webster doesn’t seem to care, but Wikipedia insists a mug has a handle.

In my shop, I call them all mugs. None of them have handles. I’m sorry.
