What's on for August
Hello everyone,
Rather than write a long diatribe about the ups and downs of being a substitute teacher (and it has SUCKED this week), I wanted to focus on what’s coming up for August because it’s going to be quite a fun month!
First - next week I get to teach a workshop at a local University. One of the nicer things that has been slowly cropping up is occasional work at Universities, teaching book making or book binding. I really enjoy these days as they are reasonably paid, quite good work and I get to connect with peers I don’t see that often. So that’s really fun.
Next week I’ll be at the printers getting a book made, it is going to be an interesting release as the artist we’re publishing is a bigish name and I’m hoping it sells somewhat quickly!
Also next week I will be launching my first real foray into merch. A few years ago I tried a t shirt that flopped, and I think it flopped because it wasn’t really good enough. It was good learning and the lesson didn’t cost much. So I’m excited to see how much more well made merch with much more intention and design around it goes.
I then head to Western Australia for my annual work trip. I think this is the third year I’m doing this, and it’s become a more expanded work trip! Last time I just taught one weekend workshop, but this time I’m teaching three workshops for adults, having some 1-on-1 mentoring sessions, teaching 4 workshops at schools, hosting a Tall Poppy Press pop up and launching a book!
We Were Just Little Boys has TWO launches this month. The first is in Fremantle on August 16th at Art Theory, from 4-6pm. This will be the screening of a short film we made about the work, a talk with Tace the artist and a chance for the work to be exhibited further.
On August 30th we’re hosting the MELBOURNE launch. This will take place between 2-4PM at Agency - a space at Collingwood Yards, and will be a conversation between Tace and an Indigenous curator. It’ll be so good.
Both of these events will be really fulfilling!
I’ve also had a few folks from WA get in touch to ask for some one-on-one mentoring. I am really enjoying these sessions because I’m good at them, the pay is decent and I feel really successful in helping folks!
So I get back to Melbourne August 17th and I have two weeks before I work full time in September for a few weeks (at a nice school I like working at). I’m not sure how much substitute teaching work I’ll do for the second half of August, but I will need to do a lot of design work, printing work, marketing work and shipping! So nothing full time!!
I’m really looking forward to August - it’s a month of teaching, selling, sharing and making, with minimal travel, minimal working at a school ages away, and a good chance to connect with loads of folks!
Chat next week!
